Many thanks for all replies, I will try it on my next excursion.
It is hard to believe that focus and exposure were ever linked. DSLR engineers/marketers were trying to simplify life for novice shooters. BBF is a logical picture taking workflow: compose, focus, meter, shoot. There are various options one can set up, depending on your shooting style.

I like it because it gives me more control. I can get that single focusing point right where I want it and then reframe.
Back Button focus
"Back button focus separates those two functions. The shutter release keeps the task of taking the shot, while a button on the back, often the AF-ON or AE AF lock, tells the camera when to use the autofocus. Holding the back button continuously focuses, while pressing the button once focuses and then locks the focus."

I watched a video on youtube about back button focusing, I have not tried it yet but it looks very promising, have any hoggers tried it and if so what are the results.
I switched about 3 weeks ago. I love it and my images have improved.

I would never go back to using the shutter button for focus again.
Well I am in the minority. I use it and can see advantages but there are disadvantages too. But I keep using it.
I've used it for years and absolutely wouldn't have it any other way. I recently switched from DSLR to mirrorless and was advised not to do it on the mirrorless. Tried it both ways and am still hooked on back button focus.
I tried it for a while off and on but when I recently got my new D7200 I started using it exclusively. It’s getting to be a habit now and I don’t think I’ll be going back.

BBF won't take you long to adjust to....especially when you see improved results. improves your odds of getting consistently sharp photos.
It's all about muscle memory. First, you have to lose the old. Then you develop the new. Then, you find yourself smashing the button with your thumb when you don't always have to.
I find you have better control of your camera and resulting image with BBF focus. Once I started using it I never went back. Especially useful for action or BIF photography. Try it for awhile and see how you like it.
Three buttons, don't forget the AE-L button. That way you're not automatically setting exposure on the focus point and they can be set independently. AE-L, then back button focus, then shoot
I have been using back button focus for years, started as a way to control shaking hands (a gift of age), now it's the first thing I set up , I mostly shoot with Nikons, but it works on most cameras . Try it ,if you don't like it , just reset to original ...

I love it. Try it and you'll most likely never go back.
