Perhaps one of the tech/PC gurus on UHH has insight to the possible cause? I have searched, but have not yet found much available information.

As always, I appreciate the feedback.

Is there another drive in the system, a platter based HD?

Hey Mark--

I agree that the culprit is most likely the fan. You don't indicate whether your computer is a desktop or laptop. Replacement will be easier if a desktop.

The main thing to keep in mind is that you will almost certainly need a specific direct replacement fan, since almost all fans used today contain either a temperature sensor or a tachometer sensor (sometimes both) that send(s) information back to a dedicated connector on the motherboard. In a laptop, the fan generally mounts directly to a "CPU cooler," with specific mounting requirements and similar connection requirements.

There used to be a business in Dallas that specialized in computer fan replacement. I haven't found them yet via a search, so they may not still be around If you have a MicroCenter or similar, you might be able to work a deal where they order a fan (prepaid) through the service department.

By the way...disconnecting the fans may or may not work. Some motherboards will sense for fan operation and shut down if they don't see confirmation that the fan is connected and operating. I once had a small form factor ("cigar box") PC that would not even start up when a fan failed.

This is a pretty common repair issue for "experienced" PCs, The only question is whether parts are still available, pretty much like for cameras these days.
Hey Mark-- br br I agree that the culprit is most... (show quote)

Thanks, Larry!
The enclosure is 14 years old, the MB and processor are 7 yrs. old. In 2016 I had a new 2TB graphics card installed by a local PC shop. They also rebuilt the PC in 2012 after a power surge during Hurricane Sandy fried the memory & MB. I also upgraded to 32 GB RAM. Looks like I have a trip the PC shop next week. Most of the time I do my own upgrading.
Appreciate the insight.

Yes, two other internal Sata data drives.

Do you have a stethoscope? Or a small funnel and a length of tubing?

I do have both, but I do not mind a trip to my PC shop. They are honest and reasonable.
Thanks,
Mark

Typically, this is a fan noise. And they are easy to replace. Your neighborhood teen geek might be your best bet, unless you 'really' want to go to BestBuy.

Most of the time I can diagnose and "fix" issues with my PC. No, I never go the "The Geek Squad" of Best Buy. I'm the "local" Geek Squad for many folks in my condo community. I'm no guru, but I'm comfortable and enjoy helping others. (no money involved). I'll use my local shop.
Thanks,
Mark

LOL, I bought a cheap stethoscope too many years ago to count, for trying to locate which was the noisy tappet. It has come in handy for many other noise tracking missions since then

My wife is my stethoscope! I wear hearing aids, but she she hears everything!!
Thanks, Rich!

You're lucky! Mine is the whining noise behind a lot of my purchases.

One of those could be yelling, but I would anticipate data errors.
(Crashed heads can scream, but you'd have data problems and the noise would change as data is accessed on the drive.)

I doubt it is either data drive. Thanks for the suggestion.

Could be the fan
Could be the switching power supply
Could be a disk

Was having a similar problem -- have a solid state & standard in my HP Tower -- Took it in both hard drives at least according to them were silent --- They placed the noise coming from the power supply or at least the fan that's keeping that critter nice & cool -- They replaced the fan & now all that is coming out of the tower is --
The Sound Of Silence

I'd be surprised if this is not a fan. You could open the task manager and see the CPU utilization. Something running in the background might be making the processor run hot. If the noise starts immediately when you start the computer and continues, then that's not it. It could be the fan in the video card, in which case it might be difficult to replace it.

(I'm showing an old Windows 7 machine, but you can get the same information in the task manager in Windows 10)
