If this fan dies the CPU and computer dies with it.

Maybe, but I overheated a laptop by accidentally blocking the vents, and the thermal protection kicked in. The machine shut down. It booted normally after allowing it to cool off.

Let us know what the problem was with the computer.

Yes, I will.

Another possibility - if the machine has a CD/DVD drive with a disk that hasn't been ejected, it could be the culprit.

I realize this is certainly not a photography issue, but this constant whining really bothers me. It is not totally constant, but is there most of the time.
Perhaps one of the tech/PC gurus on UHH has insight to the possible cause? I have searched, but have not yet found much available information.

As always, I appreciate the feedback.

I think I have found the whining culprit. I closed everything except those services running in the background. (virus app, Amazon Photos). As the CPU usage increases, the whining goes from 0 to loud. I did not open the case to explore, but I did open Task Manager and observed CPU usage vs whining. When the CPU usage goes above 25% the whining is loud. The only intensive CPU usage is the upload to Amazon Photos (I've been doing that for 2+ weeks). If I open PSCC or LR the whining is constant.

My conclusion is that the whining is directly related to CPU. Consequently, I believe it is the CPU fan.
I'd appreciate feedback on my "thinking".
Thanks,
Mark

That sounds very logical to me. If that turns out not to be the problem, there may be one or two other variable speed fans cooling the space inside the case. CPU fan first, though. It is smaller, faster, and more tightly coupled to CPU loading.

Do what I suggested way back. If a desktop, open it. Stop the fan with your fingertip to see if whining stops. If a laptop, hold the air exhaust port up to your ear. You'll definitely know. It can't be anything else on a laptop.

Discovered the source of the whining noise. It's not the CPU fan. It's the back fan. Having it replaced.
Thanks for all the suggestions, conjectures and feedback.

Thanks, Earnest. Most times it is usually something simple. My next door neighbor called me about an hour ago. She has a Mac and had a “Microsoft Scam” on the screen. The screen was locked, blah, blah, ...
She’s 87, alive & alert, but lacking tech savvy. I went over, shut the Mac off and rebooted. No more “Scam”. Simple, but not for her.

Take care!!

A lot of people fall for these scams, Mark. Most of these ransomeware invasions are nothing most of the time, they hope you fall for the don't turn your computer off, call a certain number and they will fix you problem. Most of the time all you have to do is reboot your computer, problem solved.

I do think a few drops of 3in1 oil on the shaft of the wheel that contains the round cage with the white mouse running around to power your computer will do the trick.
