In my case the seller sent me a text message at some off hour early (like 2am) in the morning. I typically am off the grid by that time...I don't sleep with my phone. What I really question is how/why the supposed seller would think someone would respond to at that hour of the day.

One thing to remember is that your local Craiglist can be seen from anywhere, including different time zones.
If a prospective seller sends a text at 2 a.m. and can't/won't wait until you wake up in the morning for your reply, too bad for him.

You are not always the only bidder. As far as Craig's List goes, I have had this happen with camera and lens listings but also with some antique car parts. I have found that if the item looks good enough to purchase ...do it then and there. Don't wait. I have not been burnt by any deals on Craig's list so far, however some items found on eBay had to be returned because they were not as listed, condition and or packing/shipping issues. Be sure you know the return policy up front and always ask for more photos if possible. David C.

I just sold a collector car on CL. Though the flakes seem to outnumber those who are genuinely interested.

It cuts both ways. I've had people on Craig's List tell me they were definitely going to buy, that they would arrive at a certain time, then they never showed. A few experiences like that and a seller just might take a "bird in the hand" rather than wait for another potential no-show.

I have had GREAT success with Craig's list. Between d800 and a couple tamron g2 lenses I have saved $3000. I'm not make money from it so cost matters.
Always talk to people and always a public place I check serial numbers and get names and do bill of sale for expensive stuff. I always test stuff. I'm currently shopping for studio flash equipment and light meter. Be cautious and shop like you always do. Good shopping.

I have sold hundreds of items on Craigslist and bought cameras from individuals all across the country, including most recently from one who initially stressed he would only sell locally for cash. There have been a couple of suspicious interactions and I declined to continue with them. I currently have over 30 items posted and have never had a complaint on either side of the transaction.

Funny you should ask that, I sold a 60D this morning. I've sold a lot of woodworking tools over the years as I built up my shop. I held many items for perspective buyers, only to never see or hear from them again. Now when I list, I advise many buyers that are going to come later that if someone comes to the door with cash, I'm selling it, especially if in initial contact they offer less than I am asking. I have also gone to make a purchase, and been told that it's been sold. Since they took my license 17 years ago (legal blindness), that is very frustrating as I either have to set up a ride or use public transportation. I generally now make my purchases on eBay or from a vendor's website.

Has anyone ever had success buying off of Craigslist??

I had deal all lined up to purchase Nikon FE body & related accessories?

Agreed on price, public place for pickup. Seller sent me text message on morning of pickup telling me he had already sold to someone else. No further explanation. I consider myself a person with integrity...a deal is a deal.

Had similar experience on Craigslist a year or so ago.

Are these supposed sellers all trying to pull a fast one ? Makes you really think about what the world is fast becoming.

Like to hear of your experiences with Craigslist.

Most people on Craigslist run on a first-come first serve / win basis. So if you find something you really want then you need to meet with him immediately if you change your mind then so be it but never rely on the cellar to hold something for you cause they will sell it most of the time.

When I buy on Craigslist, I want to go right after the conversation to buy the item (s). If they're going somewhere, I either ask if I can meet them where they're going, or a time when they come back. This eliminates the selling to someone else.

Honestly, you can't really blame people for selling out from under you. I've had people call up and commit to buy on the phone, and never see them ever again! This happens more than you know.

If you set up a time later in the day, or week, the seller doesn't know your an honest person. And 10 to 1, they've had someone say they're coming, and don't.

While I have not purchased from Craigs List I have purchased a lot of gear from ShopGoodwill.Com and off of eBay. I have only been burned once in probaby 50 plus purchases and I was able to resolve the one issue I did have. The savings over new or from some of the major retailers is significant and worth the risk in my opinion. I know others will disagree but if you are careful it can work to your benefit.

In this situation it was the seller who was not immediately available to complete transaction.

I've had good and very few bad experiences on craigslist. Like one person said before set up the meet as soon after talking as you can. There is a learning curve for craigslist. I just sold a diesel pusher class A motorhome on craigslist. Turned out good. I've been buying and selling there for years and have some bad experiences. One thing to remember "cya" or cover your ass.

Had the same experience several years ago with a watch. It happens...there are greedy people out there.

Yes, CL works. Sorry to hear of your troll.
Purchased a Canon 24 - 70 I without a problem a few years ago.
Good luck.
KEH and MPB are good for used, as well as B&H, Adorama, Cameta, Amazon, Roberts, etc.
