Has anyone ever had success buying off of Craigslist??

I had deal all lined up to purchase Nikon FE body & related accessories?

Agreed on price, public place for pickup. Seller sent me text message on morning of pickup telling me he had already sold to someone else. No further explanation. I consider myself a person with integrity...a deal is a deal.

Had similar experience on Craigslist a year or so ago.

Are these supposed sellers all trying to pull a fast one ? Makes you really think about what the world is fast becoming.

Like to hear of your experiences with Craigslist.

I’ve had good experiences on Craigslist, mostly buying, some selling. I did have a similar experience with a kayak last year. They guy was in the process of moving to Boston and wouldn’t be back for three weeks. We worked out the day and time and I took a day off to make the deal. He texted me that morning that it was sold. Not the way to treat people!

I have had success with Craigslist transactions, the few that I've had. Sorry you had a (repeated) bad experience.

Though limited in number, the experiences I've had on CL have been quite good. It is not my first choice when looking for used equipment.

Personally, I wouln't buy anything on craig's list. Too many risks. For used photo stuff - KEH, B&H,Adorama or Ebay

I've now placed Craigslist on my "do not bother with" list.

Going forward I'm sticking with the big boys...B&H, Adorama, KEH, etc. They always come thru.

I live in Milwaukee, WI...unfortunately our city is way underserved when it comes to brick & mortar camera shops. The two (2) that come to mind (Art's & Mike Crivello) aren't worth walking into. Many years back we had Helix Photoart and Reimers...both pro level shops. They both had excellent new and used inventory and knowledgeable staff. Both stores long gone.

Traveling used photogear shows used to come to town...always crowded with sellers and buyers. Was fun just to see what some old putz sellers would drag in to sell...some junk other stuff incredible high end showing little to no use at all having been squirreled away in some long gone relative's closet.

Sold a few things there (no photo gear), only bought a Nikkor 20mm F4 from a seller in St. Louis as my only purchase. Funny thing was, we both hailed from West Baltimore. The lens had an almost imperceptible scratch dead center, Thus I got the lens for $35.... The scratch has no impact on resultant images....

I must emphasize that Craiglist for me is for local pickup. Anything involved shipping Ebay is a better place. Now I have done a good number of buying and selling with craiglist and the results are positive. In your case what the seller did is unethical but I would accept that when the seller found someone who is willing to pay more. I never had such a problem because the stuff that I bought I am quite sure nobody else wants.

As far as I'm concerned the Seller in this instance was an unethical jerk !!

Not really all that much risk if you choose the time/location and, before finalizing the transaction, thoroughly inspect the merchandise to make sure everything works as it should.

I have bought and sold many things on Craigslist and have never had a bad experience. I bought my Canon 80D on Craigslist and we met in a public parking lot specifically for safe transactions at the police station. I think that was in either Morganton or Hickory, NC.

When I buy on Craigslist, I want to go right after the conversation to buy the item (s). If they're going somewhere, I either ask if I can meet them where they're going, or a time when they come back. This eliminates the selling to someone else.

Honestly, you can't really blame people for selling out from under you. I've had people call up and commit to buy on the phone, and never see them ever again! This happens more than you know.

If you set up a time later in the day, or week, the seller doesn't know your an honest person. And 10 to 1, they've had someone say they're coming, and don't.
