I've been struggling with the same for a week or so, finally changed to a new (both corded) mouse, problem solved!! They do wear out.

I did the same about 7 years ago. Still have the same Logitech wired mouse ($10). Never have any issues.

I have wireless mouse and had a problem not with the mouse but the transceiver in the USB port. Took it out and put it back a couple of times and solved the problem. Contacts must have been slightly corroded??

An optical mouse can collect gunk on its rubber feet from your desk. Take a look, and scrape off the gunk. This will improve mouse action!

The pointer keeps sticking & although several actions taken, nothing works to resolve the problem.

If it is an optical or laser mouse, try cleaning the sensor/laser window on the bottom of the mouse. Over time it can accumulate dirt, eventually causing the mouse to become less responsive. Either window cleaner or lens cleaner will do.

I'm sure many people have tossed out their malfunctioning mouse when all it needed was just a quick cleaning to work like new again!

Dang! Been having trouble getting my mouse to track properly and a spot of Windex did the trick. Would not have thought o do that. As you said -- I was about ready to get a new mouse. Thank you!

I always use corded mice. They seem more responsive to me. Currently have a Logitech gaming mouse.

When I worked in a Zoology department it was someone's job every month to go around and make sure the mouse balls were clean. We cleaned them with alcohol wipes and everything went smoothly.

How did the mice feel about that?

How did you get their legs apart to clean them, and didn't the alcohol sting?

If it's a ball type you have to take the ball out and clean the two rollers. They pick up gunk and lint and won't roll like they're supposed to. It used to happen all the time when I was tied to a computer doing AutoCAD work drawing maps all day.

We found that a mouse with clean balls was a happy mouse and performed well.

The alcohol didn't sting if you swallowed quickly or so I was told. As for the first part of the question - it was a zoology department.
