how does it do on acquiring and tracking focus of a bird ?

That's one of the things it excels at. I have 3 RX10 cameras but the IV came out with much better continuous auto focus tracking than the previous models. I do a lot of birds in flight and the auto focus and tracking combined with that great 24-600 (35mm equiv) glass it is actually the perfect camera for that.

I've done 16x20 prints with no problems at all. Of course a full frame has better resolution, especially if you crop a lot, but for most purposes the RX10 IV will suit your needs. Sure the menu takes a bit of getting used to but it has so many programmable buttons and dials that I have most of the menu items that I regularly use easily accessible on one of those. I rarely have to go into the menu system.

If you get it, also get The Photographer's Guide to the Sony RX10 IV by Alexander S. White. It explains everything about the camera, menu, and suggested settings much better than the Sony manual.

I got rid of my Canon 5D III and all of the expensive glass, due to back problems, and bought the Sony RX10-IV. The quality exceeded my expectations, BUT it is a real learning process. The menus are extremely complex. You must download the help guide from the internet AND buy a 650 page book by a Gary Friedman. He does a good job of explaining the intricacies and then advises to learn just two of the many ways you can do things.

Please post your info and research, I value all onions. This, for me, is a large investment and I don’t want to make a costly mistake. There is so much info out there it is increasingly difficult to sort thru, A pro photographer’s opinion is invaluable.

Hello,
I own the RX10M3. It is also very good! I had the fz1000. I got rid of it because I did not like it. I was a little disappointed with it. I know it may be going too far but I noticed that the lens fstop is not too good. It starts out at f2.8 and maxes out at f8. I shot film for years and had everything available. I wanted to have all the settings that were available
The Sony is a great camera. I have taken pictures all over the world and they were great with the Sony!
It is easy to use and with the long zoom and handling it does the job well.
Have fun! You will love it!

Weight being an issue, I have bee very pleased with my RX100vi. I resisted liking the camera at first, but I now enjoy it.

I would have preferred one with a viewfinder. I chose a Panasonic Lumix.

Update: I find the RX100 IV does have a pop-up viewfinder.

I like the pop-up viewfinder on the RX100VI.

I thank you for the sound advice. I think I will wait a little longer and see what the next version looks like. I would like to see the battery life issue resolved as well as the addition of a second card slot. There was also a question of speed of the zoom, not sure about that.

I never understand negative comments about battery life in any camera. Spring for the second battery and it's no longer an issue. Rx10IV is great for what it does. No other camera comes close with comparable features.

Try some camera comparison sites. I wouldn't give up my D750 for anything. I have a small Sony a6000 for when I want a pocket camera, though.

We all strive for the best photo we can produce. That said I recently sold my Sony 70-400 G lens( $2000.00 purchase price) The image quality of my Sony RX10 M4 is Better than my A77ii with the Big Sony lens attached[=seagull5]Have had a RX10M4 forI guess 9 months or so. I can only say that it has been the best piece of equipment that I have had the pleasure of owning. I find that it does everything I want and does it well. I take mostly wildlife and the lens shutter speed and sensor are exceptional. It is a pleasure to use and I feel lucky to have one. I would say once you have some time to learn the menu you will be plesently surprised. Have fun.The book by White has been invaluable.[/quote]

Re: Roy Radlauer (Sony RX10 IV). I suggest that you purchase the Sony from B & H. They give you thirty days in which to return it - no questions asked. If you are satisfied that the image quality is acceptable to you and that the camera justifies the steep price. Keep it. Otherwise return it. Another option is this: Nikon has inexpensive lightweight DSLRs as well as lightweight lenses. For example the af-p 18-55 VR, the AF-P 70-300 VR, and the af-p 10-20 VR. Also, the 50 f1.8 and the 35 f1.8. In any event-good luck. Davidb1879.

I bought an earlier RX10 and had to return it as I was over whelmed when I went into the menu.
It lost me completely.
Took good photos tho.
Bought a Canon G9X Mark 2

That camera has a whole bunch of features and can do a lot of different things, but that menu is formidable to say the least. Hopefully someone, someday, will write a book along the lines of "Sony RXIX for Dummies". In the meantime I just enjoy the using the features I know now and not trying to learn everything in the menu in one gulp, which in my case probably includes more than one thing I would never have a use for anyway.
