Highly recommend both Mark Smith, who has an ebook on setting up the D850 for bird photography, and Steve Perry's ebooks, Can't go wrong with advice from these talented individuals.

I follow both of these guys. All I was indicating is that auto iso is used for certain situations and certainly not exclusively.

When I transitioned from a D300 to a D800E, I felt the same sense of being overwhelmed. I went to Nikonians and found one of their courses--this one happened to be a two-day, classroom-based class--and loved it. I walked out with all the information I needed to get the most out of my new gear. Check the Nikonians website.

Yes it is challenging and I am still learning. However, I think that it is well worth it.
Great start.

I jumped from a D200 to D300 to D810 to D850. Of all the hardest to learn was the D200, as my first Nikon was a N2000 film camera. Each one has its own learning curve and placement of buttons and adds of features. The D850 most certainly has more bells and whistles. The only thing I miss is a built in fill-flash. Love the "focus shift" (photo stacking) option as I like to do macro photos too.

As for learning tools... I bought a used DVD entitled "Nikon D850 Crash Course - Made for beginners" by Michael the Maven. It has been most helpful and has an easy access video menu. I keep reviewing it a chapter at a time until it sticks in my old brain.

I didn't find it all that challenging. The first weekend I had it I spent doing test photos and analyzing the camera's capabilities. After that, it was take it on a road trip and use it. I really liked the results I got and posted them here a few weeks ago.

Bob: When did you acquire a Nikon D850 and how does it compare to the D800? (BTW...jealous here! lol)

Reconvic any pennies leftover to loan out? lol

The sorry part is I had theft and I lost my D50, Nikkor 60 2.8 macro and Tamron 28 - 300MM . so I need to replace the lenses too. Right now I only have my d90. I loved my 60mm Macro.

Many may not agree (of course :-), but get a good used D810 and you'll be just as pleased until you are ready. I have both (do event work and need two bodies) - set them both up identically (so as to not worry which is which), and I get the same incredible - identical - images from both. Only difference is the final file size when I shoot raw. When I shoot for a fine art purpose, sure - I tend to grab the 850 - but don't need to, actually - since I don't see myself printing for a 'billboard' any time soon. :-)
