Best tip from a long ago departed native. Wear good shoes, Keep constant awareness of your surroundings (that means people, too), and most of all bring money.

Before you go, test the max ISO that your camera delivers acceptable images that can be processed to eliminate noise. Use that ISO and than choose Aperture or shutter priority, adjusting as otherwise usual.
Shoot RAW, because the light colors change depending upon the dominant source--like teh Pepsi Neon Sign on the East River or Times Square. Then adjust in PP.

Don't go out alone and pay attention--to everything. New Yorkers are the best people in the world and 9 million of them dilute the 10,000 lunatics. BUT, the lunatics are out there in numbers every day and night.

The Conservatory Garden in Central Park. A visit to B&H if only to see their method of transporting goods throughout the store. You're sure to find something you just can't live without.

We will be in New York City for a short visit. Going on a Carriage ride in central park. Any hints on taking photos at nite..settings etc. Trip is spur of moment! Not much practice. Staying at the Manhattan Club. So I sure I will be taking pictures out of the room windows. Also new experience... Any help would be great. Thanks... Mary Ann

Mary Ann:

I learned this the hard way. I was shooting out a hotel window with my camera and tripod about 3 feet from the window. Gosh darn if a small nightlight in the room didn’t reflect off the window and into each of my photos. Either make absolutely certain all extraneous lights in the room are off, or use a lens skirt so that there is no chance of light leaking in between you lens and the window. Have a wonderful trip.

Metropolitan Museum of Art is world class and premits photography (nop flash) in most exhibits.

This is not relevant to the OP’s question, but to anyone reading this who takes the advice about food and Little Italy seriously, DONT! There are many top notch Italian restaurants in NYC, but they’re not in “Little Italy” which ceased to exist as an Italian enclave about sixty years ago. Also the real Chinatown is in Flushing, Queens.

Chinatown is also in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Yes, avoid the tourist trap formerly known as Little Italy. Though there are still some outstanding Chinese and other Asian restaurants in Chinatown, particularly around Grand St, east of Allen St. and East Broadway, and a few on and near Bowery. Just look inside at the clientele - if they are mostly Asian, the food is probably decent. There are also some good Malaysian, Fujian, Shanghai, Hakka, and other regional places that serve up good food. But the real diaspora of Asian/SE Asian is found in Main St, Flushing, Queens. Especially in the food courts in the malls.

We go to NYC one or more times a year. There is more there than you can do or see in a 3 or 4-day trip. I never miss the Bronx Zoo. It's worth the trip. Central Park is a must and they also have a small zoo. MOMA is high on the list as is the Museum of Natural History. A ride across and back on the Staten Island Ferry is a treat and it goes past the Statue of Liberty. Have fun and eat where you need reservations.

Most, if not all, of the facilities listed in the Museums Council of NYC - http://www.museumscouncil.org/ - have at least one day that offers free admission. For the Bronx Zoo and the NY Botanical Gardens )just north of the Zoo across Fordham Rd) it's Wednesday, and the NY Botanical Gardens offers free admission on Saturday morning from 9-10.

If you plan ahead, NYC can be a world class bargin. Just take a serious look at the cost of the competition: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Singapore, Sydney, etc. We in the US don't appreciate what a treasure we have. The same is true for Washington DC, Phidelphia, Los Angeles, San francisco, and many more US cities.

As you can see, I'm behind on the forum, but if you haven't gone yet here is my advice based on limited experience. We were there in September and a month ago (April 2-6). We stayed in Mid-town both trips and will do the same next time (on W 37th between 5th and 6th Ave); great location. We really enjoyed hanging out in and around Bryant Park. We went to Central Park this time and took a pedicab tour that stopped several times so we could get out and take photos; highly recommended. Our favorite restaurant (we found it on our September trip) is Casa Nonna on W 38th; great food and atmosphere. Another place we enjoyed was Mad Dog and Beans on E 38th near 5th Ave; a funky Mexican restaurant. Check out their specials and the margaritas are great. We thoroughly enjoyed the musical "Ain't too proud" about The Temptations (even more than "Beautiful" that we saw in September- and that is saying something). The 9/11 memorial is a must see. We weren't able to make it on the Staten Island Ferry, but that's another reason to go back. I was going to go to B&H, but they were closed during the only time we had available to go. We didn't think we were going to enjoy NYC as much as we did, but it's an amazing place and we'll be back.

Great list but I would have put the Brooklyn Heights promenade at number one, and Brooklyn Heights has more interesting old architecture than Greenwich Village.
