We will be in New York City for a short visit. Going on a Carriage ride in central park. Any hints on taking photos at nite..settings etc. Trip is spur of moment! Not much practice. Staying at the Manhattan Club. So I sure I will be taking pictures out of the room windows. Also new experience... Any help would be great. Thanks... Mary Ann

Central Park has a lot of photo opportunities.

My wife and I were there again last November and we brought back lots of good pictures from Fifth Ave.

If you get the chance to get down to Little Italy you can enjoy some fantastic dishes. The Brooklyn Bridge isn’t that far from Little Italy. And Chinatown is right next door. Many chances for street photography along the way.

Mary Ann, Also consider:
The Whispering Spot at The Grand Central Terminal
At this location in front of the Oyster Bar & Restaurant, you’ll find an archway. You and a friend should stand at opposite ends and start talking to the wall and listen to what happens. This spot is one of the most popular in the city for marriage proposals. lol

#1 Staten Island Ferry, free, best view of the Statue of Liberty, a/l 135mm on crop frame camera,
#2 walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, harbor views, Lower Manhattan
#3 Little Italy and Chinatown, they are kind of merging together, you can get Chinese dinner and walk a
couple of blocks and get Italian desserts. Beware of street vendors in this area.

Above are good both day and night, #1&2 Sunrise and Sunset too.

#4 Highline, first of it's kind.
#5 Greenwich Village
#6 NY Museum of Natural History, make sure you see the whale, right now there is a butterfly conservatory in there too.

Need More ideas just ask, Bob.

BTW, on Staten Island, Sailors Snug Harbor, old buildings, colonial garden and imported from China, Chinese Scholars Garden, check web site for availability and $ for entrance to the Chinese Garden, most of the rest is public, Part of NYC Parks, just a short bus ride from the ferry.

Welcome to the forum

Just a follow up for the benefit of the OP who may not realize that the Cloisters is far away from midtown Manhattan, and from a convenience and safety point of view is best visited by car, especially at night.

Best suggestion I have is to take a shot, look at the rear preview screen, adjust if necessary and shoot it again.

I did exactly that the last time I shot in Manhattan, using a Sony bridge camera (RX10M4)

You should be able to see the settings I used in the exif data on each photo.

Be sure to walk the Brooklyn Bridge and if you get the change read the book by McCullough on it's construction shortly after the Civil War. Remarkable book! Remarkable bridge!

Try Randall's Island if you can. It's accessible by bus from Manhattan and has some of the best views in NYC. It's also a city park and free. Great bridge photos from there too.

Here are forty-five spots to shoot. If you need more - well, you won't need more. : )

Hope you allowed plenty of time for this trip. In Central Park: Bethesda Fountain (around 72nd st) the Ravine (around 103 st), Strawberry Fields (@ 72nd St). Further downtown the 9/11 Memorial and the Oculus which is near by. South Street Seaport.

I think the best nighttime pictures of the city can be had from the Brooklyn Promenade in Brooklyn Heights. It is off the street and about 4-5 blocks long. All of lower Manhattan is just across the water. You look to your right and you can see the bridges. If you feel adventurous you can from there walk to DUMBO (Down Underneath the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) terrific opportunities from there. Plenty of places to eat around either location.

This is not relevant to the OP’s question, but to anyone reading this who takes the advice about food and Little Italy seriously, DONT! There are many top notch Italian restaurants in NYC, but they’re not in “Little Italy” which ceased to exist as an Italian enclave about sixty years ago. Also the real Chinatown is in Flushing, Queens.

We go to NYC one or more times a year. There is more there than you can do or see in a 3 or 4-day trip. I never miss the Bronx Zoo. It's worth the trip. Central Park is a must and they also have a small zoo. MOMA is high on the list as is the Museum of Natural History. A ride across and back on the Staten Island Ferry is a treat and it goes past the Statue of Liberty. Have fun and eat where you need reservations.
