The pockets in the vest of your photo doesn't look that big. I bought a fishing vest at Dick's Sporting Goods for about $30.00. Many pockets and two of them can hold my Nikkor 300mm lens.

Is the attached screenshot a bargain or bust?
I would appreciate any feedback.

I never was able to find one with pockets big enough to hold lenses. So I bought a small slingbag that will hold two extra lenses and a battery. It's about the size of a shoebox. Works perfectly for what I needed to work and move in confined spaces in crowds.
No film to carry and an extra battery and memory cards don't require a vest.

Jim:
The pockets on this one look pretty small to me. If you can find a vest with bigger pockets and some elastic material around the top of the pocket, that will accommodate a lens and also help it remain in the pocket if you twist about or lean over.
All the vests that I’ve seen have had zippers in the front as opposed to snaps.
We are getting into that time of year when everyone is heading outdoors. Keep you eyes open. You may find a vest you like at the most unexpected of stores.
Jungle Jim, My wife and I used to take landscape photos using 35 mm B&W, Kodachrome and Velvia. We each had a vest for bricks of film, mailers, filters, lenses, notepads, extension tubes, telextenders, plus a lot of other things. We needed the vests then - NOT NOW. Our vests haven't been used for years and look now just as nice as they did when we purchased them. They are really fishing vests: L.L.Bean (L) and Field&Steam (2XL). The L.L.Bean has 2 zipper pockets about 8" wide (my Nikon 18-300 easily fits) and 2 zipper pockets about 12" wide, 7 velcro pockets, and 6 lower-inside pockets which each hold 3 rolls of 35mm film. It also has an inside zipper pocket with pockets for pen and compass. The F&S vest has 2 zipper pockets about 8" wide, 8 velcro pockets, a loop and 4 metal D-rings to hand things on. Photographers don't use these much any more. I was thinking about giving them to a couple of fishermen I know. If you are really serious about buying a vest you could have one or both of these for the cost of USCP Priority Mail. If I send them to you and you decide you don't want them, I'd like for you to return them so I could give them to a fisherman.

You are very kind and I certainly appreciate the offer. I would need a 3XL and therefore your vests are too small for me. I am very touch by your offer. Hope your fisherman friend can use them.
Sincerely,
Jungle Jim
I agree -- sometimes I want to 'travel light' and a photo vest is ideal. I don't use my Weekender Traveler often but I wouldn't want to be without it. Unlike the one in the photo, the pockets are ample and numerous. I don't use it to carry lenses, however -- since I don't think that would be comfortable; but if I am hiking and traveling light, with the one lens on my camera, my vest can carry everything else from filters, cards, batteries to my cell phone and id.
I had one made several years ago with more pockets the size I needed. I believe the cost was about $80.00 dollars and the woman did a fantastic job with it. For me it was well worth the cost. Like everyone is saying to you be sure the pockets are large enough for your lenses. If you're carrying a 70 to 200 or 300 lens then you should measure them before you go out searching so you'll know what you're buying is what you need.
Just a thought, David

I am a 69 year old disabled vet. my neck is fully fused and I wouldn't be able to shoot without my vest. I have 2 straps that can securely hols 2 of my Nikons with lenses attached. I carry a portrait lens and a fisheye in the side pockets. My 70-200 fits in the pouch in the back of the vest. Just make sure that you can carry everything you need; and most of all make sure it is COMFORTABLE.
I use the previously mentioned BDU load bearing military surplus/police style ones. Mine is black, with lots of big pockets, and many small ones. The problem I find is it "sweats" in warm weather...my lenses collect condensation. Otherwise, they can be had cheap and are tough. I find it to be a workable solution. As a side note, one of my photo instructors said that photographer vests in camera stores signals to unscrupulous sales staff that you are an easy mark. Phooey! I can take care of myself, and I really don't care about how it looks! It works...that's all I care about.
I got a backpack much like what you described - from the Canon website. I'm carrying one camera body and 2 lenses, so there's lots of extra room, sometimes I pop my old point-and-shoot into one of the empty compartments. Second compartment for birding binoculars, snacks, etc., and other outside pockets and so on, straps supposedly for the tripod case that I haven't figured out yet (mostly since I am still learning basics and don't use the tripod all that much for now).
I bought the camera from the website so I got a discount on the backpack. I'm really new to all this, but I have taken it to a few wildlife refuges and so far it's working well for me.
I would say, this is a traveling vest, no way big enough pocket for equipment
