120 is the largest a few screens can produce. That said, I usually Res to 120 and resize to 8X10 inches as that will allow most monitors to display readable text and a emailable size file to be sent...
I regularly scan and send many more pages in pdf. Very readable.
Did you scan as a 34 page PDF or as a series of JPEGs? Is the doc a bunch of images or text. For text you can run ppi down a lot, but images no.

Have you tried DoroPDF as a printer driver to see what the file size is? File size seems to be high for 34 pages.

Your best bet is to use a transfer service such as Dropbox.

why not transfer through Dropbox or Wetransfer. Both are free and the receiver can download. I find Wetransfer to be easier. wetransfer.com
Adobe Acrobat has an Enhance scans tool. This will make text recognizable and reduce file size.
Use Wetransfer - it is free and transfers up to 2GB

Scan it at 72DPI and see if that works. Best of luck.

Us Wetransfer.com to send your file. The website is easy to use, can send a file up to 2GB and it's free. I've used it many times.
Do look into the Google mail drop. I've sent at least one 201mb, 102 pages of writing and photos by Gmail and the program automatically converted it to a mail drop meaning it would only be available to the readers for a few weeks but they could get it and download it for as long as they wanted.
On the other hand just try scanning it as low as you can go and if you can see it on your screen it will probably show up OK on the receiving screen as long as you don't need high resolution for your audience.
Easiest thing to do is to email them in a zip file
