I thought "...you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than a basic P&S at that price." addressed that question. Don't you? I then gave suggestions if basic P&S was inadequate. Heck, the cell phone costs nothing more, but I assume is inadequate and so might be a basic P&S.

Actually, Paul … a cellphone costs a WHOLE LOT MORE, as you have to keep paying for it - thru the nose!!

Once you have a digital camera - it's yours - forever - with no more payments, necessary - other than "fuel" - spare batteries and SD cards, and - perhaps - a bag to put it in ….

Speaking of which - here's yet another deal on the FZ-70 - this one comes w/ a bag and a spare battery:

"Find great deals on eBay for panasonic fz 70. Shop with confidence. Skip to main content. eBay Logo: Shop by category. ... 130 product ratings - Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 16.1MP Digital Camera ~BUNDLE~w/ case and extra battery. $159.89. FAST 'N FREE. Buy It …"

Good grief - you find something to contradict with everyone!
A cell phone YOU ALREADY HAVE costs nothing MORE - OK?
Many basic P&S are no better than a smart phone. OK?
I have also recommended the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80, the FZ70 is no longer in production. I don't usually suggest models I can't find at reputable stores with 100% satisfaction guarantees. OK?

Not at all Paul … it's just that you suggested the FZ-80 - which, even on sale - costs around $280 …

The previous model is still available new - and comes closer to the $130 budget - Google it!!!

I wouldn't know about cellphones - since I don't have one, but, I think you need to pay for them, monthly.

FYI - when you get a new cell phone you have the option of paying for it in full at the time or pay monthly until it is paid off.

I could not find the DMC-FZ70 from a reputable dealer with 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. There is, however, the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 which IS still current that I suggested.

I don't know, Paul - but it seems to me - when you have one - you're always paying for it, in some way or other. I know I couldn't afford to do that. With cameras, once you've bought it - it's yours - no more to have to pay on it - ever!!!

I did a search in my browser for the FZ-70 … two listings I didn't catch, before - one - on Amazon … and the other - for B&H - but when I got there - it indicated it's no longer available. Haven't done Amazon, yet ...

Definitely misinformation, I have a Samsung Infuse from 2012 without a provisioned SIM card with no cell service. I haven't paid anything for that phone in 4 years. If I was to activate the phone I would be paying for a service, not a phone.

The Nikon P500 is a very good choice. It will be hard finding even a used one at $130.00 , but you never know. Good luck. You can never go wrong with Nikon.
