I find it curious that I'm discussing Easter Island on a photography venue. Your view is what I would call the "mainstream view." That these unsophisticated primitive people could have done all this elaborate work with simply basalt rocks to hammer with and that it was all done certainly within the last 1000 years by Polynesians who got out of their outrigger canoes and got to work. …. My conclusion, and I've visited there twice and seen everything the diligent tourist can find to look at and read several books about the place and many articles (that don't appear in the MSM) is that I don't know and nobody knows what really happened there. ... You could be 100% right but all anyone can say with their ideas is that it could have happened this way and it can't be proven wrong either. ....

it's mainstream because it's the ONLY view with any evidence.
you did say earlier that you thought there were already people there, but offered no evidence.

as far as being able to use simple tools to carve the statues, there the 3500 year old unfinished obelisk in Egypt -

"Carving the monuments directly in the bedrock was a common technique, and stone balls were used by masons to pound out any imperfections until the surface was smooth. There are still examples of these Dolerite balls, on-site as Aswan. Harder than granite, the Dolerite wouldn’t crack or break after repeatedly pounding against the stone surface." https://mymodernmet.com/unfinished-obelisk-aswan-egypt/

you dont need a dslr to take great travel pix -- for years I've used cameras in sony's cyber shot family - small enough to fit inside my ski parka, with great zoom & sharp zeiss lens. I recently switched to bridge camera - lumix fx1000 for a trip to morocco and the results were so good imay sell my dslr

That's the kind of advice I need. I have been looking at the fx1000 as well as zs200. I could buy a heavy DSLR but I know I would be disappointed it is too heavy and bulky for foreign trips to do trekking. So when I do get a Lumix 1000 or similar I will be asking questions in the meantime I am posting here to practice and learn the system.

Just for our enjoyment I'll continue the discussion. No there's no evidence that people were there thousand of years ago, at least none has been found. The Polynesians say that the first settler was Hotu Matua who came there from somewhere else. Thor Heyerdahl thought from So. America. It sounds like that happened long ago. As I understand it one trouble with dating Easter Island is that there is little pottery to be found even the Polynesians supposed "Lapita" pottery and even if you did find some you can't radio carbon date it. So I'm not really sure how the archaeologists come up with an arrival date of 1000 A.D. But aside from that there is no evidence that the Polynesians actually made the statues. No written record, certainly. I don't think the Polynesians claim they did it except in the sense that the "old ancestors" built them and then moved them by "mana". And the Polynesians don't date them by saying we did this 500 years ago. They seem to be very vague about dates. So I could counter by saying "Where's the evidence the Polynesians did build them?" Also, how did the Polynesians shape the many basalt blocks when there is nothing harder on the island to use? Anyway I have seen many old ruins especially in Peru and Bolivia and I can see the view I come up with is different than yours. As I said you could be 100% right and the mainstream is 100% right also. But I am not convinced from my travels and observations. I think I'll leave it at that.

I'm not exactly sure which camera this is. I see a FZ 1000 but you say fx 1000. Can you clue me in? I understand Panasonic uses different names in different countries.
