Did you try and see what he was looking at? May have noticed a large bird. Lions are also opportunists and sometimes steal other hunter's catches. If he thought he had seen a vulture he may be thinking "Lunch without working."

Not for long. From the time I saw that expression and clicked the shutter, he was back to his normal expression

Thank You Dean. It is what I call once in a life time expression. I did find another Lion that was angry because the photo group got to close and he growled. Got that expression also.

Quite often, it is more fortuitous to be lucky than good, or words to that effect. Timing also important. Looks like you are lucky and good. Hard to beat that combo!

We live about two hours from Out of Africa and have never been up there. I may have to go just to see this lion. What a beautiful shot at the right moment.
