On the pc , the updates & apps they think you want slow it down. Every time I get an update= slower.

The one firm I've done work for, the IT department is a 'Profit Centre', and they make more profit if they are using inferior hardware.

The Surface Pro has the memory soldered to the motherboard I believe so not that easy :)

Time to get out the de-soldering braid...

I'd also recommend turning off the scheduler for the defrag task for your SSD. From what I understand, it's not only unnecessary but wears the drive faster.

Microsoft has a program called 'Trim' that works similar to 'Defrag' but is written for SSDs. This can speed up operations a bit.

A defrag program should not be used with SSDs.

I had my computer guy install an SSD because he said my HDD was the cause of my slow down of my computer. It was taking more than five minutes for my computer to boot up. He installed the HDD and now my computer boots up instantly. It takes 12 seconds for the first screen to come up and then as soon as I enter my passcode the computer boots up in less than one second!

I thought the answer would be more RAM. My computer guy really knows what he’s doing. He’s a guy in his 50s like me an old-school guy, an old timer who knows the old stuff and the new stuff. You wouldn’t believe how happy I am. Just wanted to share.

Yes, an SSD is a real sped demon. However, depending how many programs you have load on startup, booting can slow down over time. I have to keep going back and remove stuff that installed itself to load at startup.

What size/brand is your drive? I have a Samsung 500GB M.2, and it's less than half full. My son does fine with a 250GB SSD. Except for Apple, all my desktops and one laptop now have SSDs.

Just counting, my LR just loaded in ten seconds.

Here are some things you can do in Win 10 to improve the speed of the computer. Computer usage tends to leave remnants behind that eventually impact speed. They are useless and elimanating them causes no harm.

Thanks for that!

Did the same just before I retired and still had money! Got a Crucial 2TB so I doubled my space as well. Love it. Took me a while to get up the nerve to do the deed, but it was not such a big deal once I got all the parts together.

I had a 1TB WD SSD ($150) put into my 6 year old lap top running Win7 and it made a huge difference. I also got a new battery even thought it is plugged in 95% of the time and that also made a huge difference.

I had the cloning and installation done by Best Buy's Geek Squad. Several programs didn't come over which surprised me. One of the programs that didn't come over was a 1998 version of Family Tree Maker. I had backup files, but I couldn't find the original installation disk. I thought I had lost 30 years of genealogy research. I had to shell out for a new version of the program which I don't really like.

Is this normal? I thought that cloning would bring everything over the way I had it before.

4. Repeat step 1. type in prefetch and delete everything that will delete.

This is a double edge sword to remove the files. The prefetch allows commonly used apps to load quicker when launched. By removing them which maybe space saving, can slow down the speed significantly when launching a particular app.

For those interested in a more automated system to clean your drives, check out the free version of CCleaner.

The only issue with using the Trim, is data recovery. Apparently at this time it isn't possible with usage. There are now several third party apps optimized for SSD drives. As I mentioned, I was not recommending defragmentation with the typical disk optimization method. As to memory upgrade, I didn't say it wasn't possible, only that it would take work and not for the weak hearted, assuming you have the correct RAM pin arrangement. Much like yourself, I've done my most recent build from scratch.

A NVMe M.2 in my i3 laptop on a cold boot will get me running in 7 seconds. Prior the 5400rpm HD took 30 seconds. Samsung's migration software made it effortless in transferring the OS and applications. Nice to have 2 HD's in the laptop.

I just boosted my RAM to 32gb (DDR4) and added a 1TB SSD to be my boot drive. The Samsung migration tool made the transition almost automatic. I'm happy. Very easy install on both.

True... data recovery with SSDs, however, is 'iffy' at best.

The M2's are definitely faster than the Sata SSD. I believe the speed is obtained by parallel querying instead of single querying found in Sata SSD's. Glad you are happy. Both my PC and laptop have benefited from the upgrades.

The M.2 was a much more simple install. Lightroom is faster, but it still lags a bit with some operations. I have an i5 processor and I am using LR 6.14.

FYI:
With Win 32 bit OS, you are limited to 4 GB RAM, unless you are running Win 7 Starter where you are limited to 2 GB RAM.

With Win 64 bit OS, you are limited to 192 GB RAM, unless you are running Win 7 Starter where you are limited to 2 GB RAM, Win 7 Home Basic where you are limited to 8 GB RAM, Win 7 Home Premium where you are limited to 16 GB RAM, Win 8.1 Pro or Enterprise where you are limited to 512 GB RAM, Win 10 Home where you are limited to 128 GB RAM, Win 10 Pro or Enterprise where you are limited to 512 GB RAM.

Any more RAM than above is about as useful as runway behind you...

I am running Windows 10 64 bit. MSI Tomahawk motherboard with i5 processor and 32gb ddr4 2400 ram. 1TB m.2 ssd as the o/s drive. My weak point may be the onboard graphics card.

Bill, what GPU and monitor are you running if you don't mind me asking?
