Lightroom is noticeably faster. Especially when exporting.

I had my computer guy install an SSD because he said my HDD was the cause of my slow down of my computer. It was taking more than five minutes for my computer to boot up. He installed the HDD and now my computer boots up instantly. It takes 12 seconds for the first screen to come up and then as soon as I enter my passcode the computer boots up in less than one second!

I thought the answer would be more RAM. My computer guy really knows what he’s doing. He’s a guy in his 50s like me an old-school guy, an old timer who knows the old stuff and the new stuff. You wouldn’t believe how happy I am. Just wanted to share.

Wanna speed your car up? Run it on nitrous oxide instead of air!
(But don't be too surprised when it throws a rod or blows out
the head gasket.)

You did remember to order an operating system designed for an SSD, right?
You're not running Windows....I hope.

Your "computer guy" .... does he have any qualifications other than being middle-aged?

When you get sick, do you go to a "medicine guy" or medical doctor?

Don't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about. Windows 10 is set up for SSD. I build computers. Sounds like your the witch doctor. You have no idea the techs qualifications so instead of being a jerk, how about being supportive and give sound advice on topics you know about.

For those with Macs who don't know, OS 10.14.x is ready for SSDs — in fact, designed for them. It uses Apple's new APFS formatting scheme, which is designed for solid state memory. The OS is backward compatible with conventional drives formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as well as outboard drives formatted with other schemes like FAT 16, FAT 32, ExFAT, etc.

My external drive is an SSD and works just fine on both my Mac and My PC laptop, my Mac is at least 3 or 4 years old now. I know that external storage is probably different than hosting the operating system... just saying that the external drives should be just fine.

I have a laptop at work that run terribly slow due to all the garbage stuff on it. The IT department kept putting junk on it so it's slow to a craw. It would take 15 minutes to boot up. I can't do anything to it so I bought an SSD and clone the drive. After that it would boot up in less than a minute. Well I had the old hard drive so I format it an reinstall the OS and software (it won't log in to the company network though) but it would also boot up in about a minute.
So the SSD is much faster than regular hard drive but junk software from IT also makes it that much slower.

Yes, they work great. Internal works great too. Windows XP and Windows 2000 don't work on SSD as far as I am aware but both Windows 7 and Windows 10 are SSD compatible. HDD is great for huge storage so people like us who store 6 TB of photos and other media should consider having both but your system should run on the SSD if you care at all about fast loading speeds of Windows, Adobe's Software, Corel, or whatever else you need to boot quickly so you can get your work done. Nice for gaming too.

Pretty much just use the computer for photos anymore, that and the web, but I do shoot RAW with a 50mg camera, don't have enough RAM, have no idea how much it would cost to upgrade a Surface Pro.

The Surface Pro has the memory soldered to the motherboard I believe so not that easy :)

I'd also recommend turning off the scheduler for the defrag task for your SSD. From what I understand, it's not only unnecessary but wears the drive faster.

Typical corporate IT incompetence... You can’t teach and certify intelligence or common sense. It’s inherited, sought out and chosen, cultivated, and consciously refined. It takes guts to reject bad ideas and ridiculous corporate crap. I dealt with it for years. Someone has to ring the bull$hit alarm.

So he did a total reinstall, I am on a Surface Pro with an SSD drive, believe me with time and all the junk one collects from browsing I believe that eventually your computer will slow down and personally I don't surf garbage or porn sites, stuff just happens these days.

On the pc , the updates & apps they think you want slow it down. Every time I get an update= slower.

I installed SSD's in all my computers several years ago, and as you say the bootup time is now down to 8-10 seconds. As SSD's were very expensive at the time I only used 120gb but now they're much cheaper I am gradually changing to 480gb and these newer seem even faster.

Not necessarily. I'm a heavy user, not a power user, and if I'm running a large FEM model, I will not require more than 16GB of RAM. If you are running a 32bit version of Windows, you can only use a couple of GBs. Other versions of 64bit Windows allow you to use less than 16GB.

I have two 512GB, M.2 PCIe drives (4 or 5 times faster than SATA) on my latest build.
