Well, the real question is whether or not you are safer with a gun than without in a criminal situation. The statistics would be easy to get from the FBI and other law enforcement organizations and it would prove one point or another.
Except that the gun manufacturers have paid millions of dollars to our legislators to pass a law that specifically prohibits law enforcement from collecting such statistics and, if collected, releasing such statistics. And another law that specifically prohibits funding any such study.
Seems the gun manufacturers don't want you to know something. I think I know what it is.

I just voted with USA today and the current poll is 97-3 in favor of the right to gun ownership. The next thing you have to ask is, "What does Eric Holder care about what the people think?"
Hey Doc ..... that 97% to 3% or ..... the number of votes for gun ownership is 11,496,899

Simply not true. I was a consultant to the FBI for 15 years on NCIC as a Subject Matter Expert. (Retired last December for a new career in Photography) UCR has criminal statistics available and the FBI reports what it gets from the states statistically. But as one Unit chief said. "There are Liars, Damned Liars and Statisticians'. Gun purchases cannot be recorded in NCIC or NICS(National Instant Check System) They only check if your a criminal when you purchase a gun.. The Record is destroyed .. The NRA didn't get their way. The FBI in no way is prevented from collecting or reporting statistics from criminal activity by Gun dealers or the NRA. (Both of which I support)
When a gun is purchased NICS does an inquiry to III (Criminal History reporting). If you have a crimnal history you can't get a gun. It also does an inquiry into NCIC. If you have a warrant for your arrest you can't get a gun.
The Universal Crime Reporting "UCR" is available online.

There is no law that stops law enforcement from collecting statistics, only a law that stops them from collating and collecting any statistic that purports to show whether guns prevent crime. The gun manufacturers paid dearly for that law. Google it.

Hey Doc ..... it didn't work .....
Technically the second amendment deals with the right to form a militia and in so doing permits the possession and use of fire arms.

I meant no attack on gun ownership as I have one...I was just saying that technically we really are not given the right own guns. The NRA know this to be true. That's why they are so vocal. The inevitable interpretation of the amendment will result in guns ownership being made illegal. We are at the beginning of a paradigm shift in the public's perception of guns. In about 10 years, maybe 15 the shift will be complete and gun ownership will have the same social stigma as cigarettes do now. Now, as I said his is at least 10 years down the road so you old guys can relax they will pry your gun from your dead fingers.
The gun lobby is strong and fed by the manufacturers of weapons. As an example: about 22% of the wholesale price of a gun made in the United States goes to finance the gun lobby. It's a business that's all just a business.
