Hi, i am a begining photographer. I have been shooting for about 5 yrs and still am confused with aperture and shutter speed. I know what they are for and how to adjust them i just get confused on how to apply them to a situation. I can not remember how they are sequenced to more light to less light if that makes any sense. I also dont edit many of my photos because i am a novice in the photoshot elements software. So with all this said thats why i concider me a biginner after 5 yrs.
Aperture: remember, the lower the number, ex.1.8, the more light is allowed into the Sensor, so the higher the number, ex. 5.6, less light to the sensor.
The lower # of 1.8 will have less depth of field in focus (in front & behind subject)
The Highher # of 5.6 will provide you More depth of field in focus.
So, if shooting a Portrait and you want your subject to "Stand-Out", and Blur the background, you would use a lower aperture such as 1.2, 1.4,1.8 depending on the lens you use.
In a Landscape, you would use a higher aperture Number, ex. 5.6 or higher to allow more of your image to be in focus. ( In front & behind your subject.)
I hope this explanation will be of assistance in your learning of Photography.
There are other Photogrphers here more experienced than I, and hopefully they will be able to assist you in your quest for more knowledge about Digital Photography
