Hi, i am a begining photographer. I have been shooting for about 5 yrs and still am confused with aperture and shutter speed. I know what they are for and how to adjust them i just get confused on how to apply them to a situation. I can not remember how they are sequenced to more light to less light if that makes any sense. I also dont edit many of my photos because i am a novice in the photoshot elements software. So with all this said thats why i concider me a biginner after 5 yrs.

Welcome Georganna to the forum. I have been doing photograph for over 50 years and still consider myself a beginner. One needs to keep up with software and hardware. Have fun, learn, post pictures and ask questions.

Welcome to our forum!

Millions of words have been written about aperture and shutter. If you shoot in Auto mode, the camera decides. I tend to shoot in Aperture priority.

A setting of f/8 will give decent focus on either side of the subject. A large aperture, like f/2.8, will put one thing in focus and blur the rest. This is good for making the subject stand out. A small aperture, like f/16, will make a larger area in front of and behind the subject in focus. Of course, proper exposure is essential, so you don't have complete freedom to choose aperture. Raising the ISO can let you shoot at smaller apertures.

A high shutter speed will help to freeze movement, while a lower speed will allow for some blur, if you like that effect. Below is a link to almost 32 million articles.

OH NO! I just got my dslr in Nov. and I am having the same issues; been spending a ton of time taking pics, changing the settings and taking more of the same and comparing the differences and still can't get a grip on it plus going online to research. Maybe we can find some kind of guide between the two of us or maybe some of the HOGs have a suggestion or two. Their really a great bunch here! Welcome aboard!
