Is the Nikon 24-85 3.5 vr afs lens better than the tokina 12-24 F/4 lens? Thanks Jim Bianco

Not sure what is being asked as these are two totally unrelated lenses.

I am thinking of selling my Nikon lend and getting the tokina wider angle lens.Would it be a decent trade off. Thanks Jim Bianco

No it is not a good trade off. I have both and they are used for entirely different applications. Why would you want to give up a good walk around lens for a wide angle?

Do you have covered the nikon focal lengths covered in other lenses?
You might find a desire to not do WA for every shot.
That said the Tokina is a well regarded lens and compares well with the nikon products optically.

The Nikon lens is a Normal range Full Frame stabilized lens, where the Tokina lens is an ultra wide crop sensor non-stabilized lens. There is absolutely no way to make any practical side-by-side comparisons of them.

The Tokina is better from 12-23mm. The Nikon is better from 25-85mm.

Which is better really comes down to the skill set of the photographer. A pro golfer can do wonders with a cheap set of clubs. Likewise, a seasoned photographer can take great shots with both.

Apples and oranges. Two lenses with completely different ranges, and therefore useful for completely different purposes. Each one is going to be "better" than the other depending what you are trying to photograph. Like asking "Which is better, a baseball or a football? Depends on the game you are playing.

The Nikon 24-85 vr is the reason I have never bought a Nikon 24-120 f4 vr. Its that good a light weight walk around lens. Keep the Nikon and buy yourself a wide angle if you feel you really need one.

Thanks for all that info, I will keep the 24-85 and later on buy a wide angle lens. The 24 -85 is a very sharp lens. Thanks again for all your intake. Jim Bianco

What is/was your intended use for these two lenses? Your question is a bit like which is better an apple or a smoked brisket?
