Some days are better than others! I usually skip the visitors center and make a couple passes on Black Point Drive. I typically come onto the Merritt Island from I-95 to Rt 406, Rt 402 and over the A Max Memorial Parkway bridge. Once over the bridge, there are some great dirt roads that can be excellent for birding. You can spend a couple hours looping around! Gator Creek Trail, etc.
Thanks for the info, Dave. Have bookmarked it for our next trip down. Things are beginning to pick up here as the Ospreys have returned in the last several weeks, the wood ducks are looking over their nest boxes and my wife, Ellen, spotted an eagle near the top of a large cypress tree at the water's edge. I carried the camera upstairs and eased open the window to get a closer shot but I was facing almost due south and the mid-morning sun was coming from the east and also the little stems left hanging on the tree even after it drops its foliage makes it very difficult to get an unobstructed shot. I haven't downloaded them from the camera yet but from what I can see won't be worth posting. Thanks again and take care.
