Here's three of the four Galloping Gooses from the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. Apparently there were only seven of them made.

Galloping Goose No. 2
Galloping Goose No. 2...

Galloping Goose No. 6
Galloping Goose No. 6...

Galloping Goose No. 7
Galloping Goose No. 7...

That's correct jackm. Only seven were built by the Rio Grande Southern RR. The ones in Golden are still operational. Another is on display in Dolores, CO., one at Knott's Berry Farm and #5, the one in my earlier pic, is owned by the town of Dolores, CO and is operated on the Cumbres and Toltec RR, the Durango and Silverton NGRR at various times and events. #1 was wrecked and scavanged for parts on #2.

If you get to Durango and like trains, see the Rio Grande Southern RR and its Galloping Goose:

These rigs were called "Motors". You're right; there were only seven built, originally with Buick and Pierce-Arrow automobiles and trucks. All were operated by the Rio Grande Southern RR. If you want to read more, go to:

Right now, there is an HO model at the California State Railroad Museum. I would sure like to see a real one on the museum floor (we have two narrow guage tracks on which to display one).

I have lived most of my life in Colorado. Most of the last 45 years in Durango and the Four Corners area. I have found it difficult to get out of this area. You have everything you could want, except the ocean. Fourteen thousand peaks to high desert, Anasazi ruins, abandoned mines, ghost towns and......... Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Cortez (Mesa Verde) Atec, NM (Aztec Ruins), Chaco CAnyon, Hovenweep. I could go on and on. Four Corners!!!

When the ice caps melt from global warming you might have the ocean too.

I don't really know if what I'm about to say is controversial or not but I was in downtown Telluride a few years ago and there was a Goose sitting on the left on the way into town in a vacant lot between two buildings. The lot was otherwise covered with waist high weeds. It may be that one of the ones you accounted for that has been moved out of there since I saw it but if not then that would make eight. I just used Google Earth and looked up and down the street and couldn't spot it so it was probably moved. Do you know about that one? I do have a photo of it somewhere.

Very interesting. Did you happen to notice the number? My guess is that it was the remains of #1, or there were more than seven built. Seven is the number that some written sources claim, but who knows...

If you're interested in railroads read "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. Try to finish it before Nov. 6.

I'll have to see if I can find the image - it was on a slide and I'm not sure if I have scanned that in yet or not. I'll look. I like this little mini Galloping Goose, (maybe a "Creeping Duck")) at Silverton. It must've been a cushy ride back in the day. When I took that shot I was torn between whether I should get the roof or the tracks flat but couldn't do both.

The one you saw in Telluride is #4. It is usually on display at the San Miguel County Courthouse. It is currently in Ridgeway, CO being restored. It will be returned to Telluride upon completion.

Thanks. As I recall, it didn't look to be in very good shape but that has been a few years ago. You sound like a man who knows his stuff. So, being such a man, tell me, what do they call that lil' thing sitting there in Silverton?

I lived in Durango for 42 years and the Four Corners for 45 and that is the first time I have seen that one. I'll research it for you. I'm curious, too!
