Just returned form a SE Asia Cruise that included Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, 4 ports in Vietnam, Hong Kong then back to Singapore. Having not been to Vietnam in 50 years thought this would be an excellent opportunity to re-visit, in a different way. Nha Trang is a small port city along the central Hignhlands coast. Being then stationed about 30 miles west and 40 miles north of Nha Trang in the Central Highlands gives a much different perspective when you see it today. Spent some time in Nha Trang during the war and the tallest building I saw and stayed in was the Nha Trang Hotel. Not to mention the White Buddha I always flew around when approaching the airfield.

Amazing what a little Capitalism and Entrepreneurship can do. Vietnam has become the fastest growing country in SE Asia and is doing quite well. People then an now are still extremely friendly and courteous. As always the water and beaches along the Vietnam cost is stunningly beautiful. Things only got better as our ship moved up the coast. Vietnam is still an agrarian country with lots of poverty but its rapidly growing and the coastal cities are great examples. However after those 50 years, the changes were awesome.

Just a few photos from Nha Trang showing the high rises and some of the local flavor.

Thanks for sharing those pictures of the city today as they blow my mind as to how it looks considering what it looked like in 1964-65. As a Huey pilot I flew in and out of Nha Trang many times. We used to low level up the beach coming in and going out and check out all the girls in their bikini's. I usually (made up) found an excuse of a maintenance problem when we got close so we could spend the night in a hotel there. My CO use to try and not send me on any mission near Nha Trang as he knew we wouldn't back until sometime the next day. Some really good times there even in the midst of a war.

Very nice images, Blast. That public parking job is the best example of the “first in, last out” principle of parking.

I seem to remember about 4 or maybe 5 floors at the Nha Trang hotel. The only thing I recognize from your shots is the one of the fish mongers. Positively amazing what a few years can do.

Wow....I would love to visit there some day. Your images are very exciting and I love Asian Fish Markets as they are extremely colorful and diverse. All of their shopping areas are photographic goldmines as I recall from the war days.

lucky you and more please if you can......thanks.

Nice work, makes one wonder just why there was ever a war there, or for that matter anywhere.

Thanks Smudgy. Its absolutely hard to believe there was a war. Most of the younger generations, <40, have no recollection of that war, best for them since they're doing better than their parents

LOL, we landed at Phu Cat and when they opened the doors to the C-141,there was that same damn smell. Now the only odorous smell is of fish and that's if your in the fish market, nice place.
