I think that the new format is to facilitate their burst mode shooting and what they call "live" photo, plus some other magic they have in the new iPhone XR.

It is NOT an Apple format, they just are adopting it. If you do as said and pick compatible mode there is no problem. It works on all of my post processing software including On1 , Topaz Studio, Luminar and of course Apple's Photo app. You can export from any of those in JPEG format if you need to. This is a no brainer. It is a better format for saving phone images but for photos I really want to process I use a raw camera app on my iPhone Xr and I always shoot in Raw on my DSLR.

And that's THAT! Thanks for the clarification and hints for sensible use.

HOWEVER, I found that I had to install Lightroom CC on both my iPhone Xs and my MacBook Pro, then open LR CC on my Mac (I already use Lightroom Classic), and Edit in Photoshop, where the Camera Raw filter is available. There was no intermediary stop in Camera Raw import, as there is when opening a dng file I've saved to the MacBook hard drive from my DSLR. Is this the workflow you use?

It's a lot more than an alternative for jpeg, amongst other things it supports 16 bit per channel color over the 8 bit per channel of jpeg.
I think apple is using 10 bits (most dslrs use a 14 or 12 bit ) This should help avoid banding in color gradients.

HEIC/HEIF was added with IOS 11. Updated to my 7+ recently. I couldn't import files into Capture One Pro12. Downloaded converter and just dropped my files to convert before importing. No big deal. I expect that HEIC support will come sometime in the future.
Imazing's link for converter.... https://imazing.com
All on MacBookPro with Mojave.

uhass, we've played with this format since apple placed it on the iPhone. It mainly serves (us) to take up less space on the phone, but we shoot with DSLRs far more than with an iPhone. In experiments during dev testing in 2018, we'd have been stymied if we hadn't been able to use iMazing's converter, which still coverts to jpg, not RAW. We set the phone to shoot HEIV and backup using the most acceptable format for the computer being used. When the time comes when all of the post-processing software have HEIV-RAW plugins, it would definitely be worth taking the time to work with.

If you regularly use an iPhone for shooting photos, you should check out the many iPhone photo/video forums, such as http://www.iphoneforums.net/forums/iphone-photography.67/

Never saw it.
Just what we need, another format.
How long before everything can accommodate this format?
(Glad I don't have an Apple phone.)

HEIC has been around for two or three years now!

The free image processor "the gimp" apparently can read heic format which should allow 16 bit tiff files to be saved out. This would give a lossless format that could be processed in the editor of your choice. Some of the third party camera apps can save in dng format which would be smaller than tiff (i think the use of cropping disables this option). It is worth looking in to if you want latitude in image processing from the iPhone.
