Apple created a new format for pictures-HEIC- what uses way less data.......what is your experience with this?

Hmmm.
Never saw it.
Just what we need, another format.
How long before everything can accommodate this format?
(Glad I don't have an Apple phone.)

Is this only with the new Iphone X? I have the IPhone 7 I guess it doesn't have HEIC.

The HEIF format doesn't use less data, it's compression algorithms are just more efficient.

For my personal use, I save my iPhone images in HEIF. It works with LR/PS. An iPhone image stored in HEIF is about half the size of its corresponding jpg of the same quality. Supports 16-bit color vs jpeg 8-bits, even though iPhone images are still only 8-bit. HEIF file can store multiple images vs only one for jpg.

The cons are that support for HEIF severely lags jpg's, so compatibility can be a limiting feature. Websites use jpg. Not all editing SW, such as Infinity, support HEIF. Sharing HEIF images can be a problem if the recipient cannot read HEIF files. Apple iOS and OS X obviously supports HEIF, Win10 can but not out of the box. Don't know if non-iphones support HEIF files.

It's also iffy whether HEIF will have a long run or die an early death.

Opinions will vary, but this is mine. Hope this helps.

Mike

There is not a compatibility issue. In photos settings make sure the “download in compatable format” is checked. It is claimed by Apple that HEIC does not loose quality during repeated “saving”. I have a 5se and it now stores in HEIC. Apple is so big that eventually it should see wide adoption. It appears to be a better format for long time sharing and preservation of photos.

It's on the 7 plus. You might not see them easily. The default is for the phone to convert to jpeg when transfering to another device such as a pc or mac. This downgrades the image quality. I think mac os 10.13 supports Heic. You may be better using a camera app that supports dng on the iphone. camera 2 + is an interesting one.

FWIW, this is not an Apple-only standard but Apple is an early adopter.

Since I open all iPhone files in Photoshop if I extend to process and keep them, this is not a huge problem. I have been impressed with my iPhone Xs Max photos' quality.

Not sure that you would be able to share those images with a lot of people.

After over 25 years of service, maybe it is time to slowly phase out the jpeg format and replace it with something better, something with today's technology in mind.

A lot of formats (files, slots, sockets, etc) came about because a license was expiring, or enforced.
.jpg and .gif file formats are 2 of these.
It seems like HEIF would be a good file implementation.
I still have doubts about Apple's generosity. and the new format's longevity- like with "Firewire".

The problem is, you can't just have JPEG drop dead or even slowly phase it out. It would be better to phase HEIC into the mix. Support for displaying/modifying has to remain for a LONG, long time, figuring how many billions of JPEGs are out there. Now they'll have to add HEIC to the system.
(Just like when they came out with MP3, MP4, .....)
And in a bunch of years there will be ANFF...

My first thought. I guess Apple thinks it's big enough that it can force a new standard on the industry. Time will tell.
