If you could shadow any photographer, who would it be?

In random order, my long list would include: Anne Geddes, Annie Liebowitz, Brooke Shaden, Sue Bryce, Joel Grimes, Meg Bitton, Anna Brandt, David Bailey, Jerry Ghionis, Sarolta Ban, Scott Kelby, Scott Robert Lim, Greg Heisler, Bambi Cantrell, Roberto Valenzuela, Kelly Robitaille, Sal Cincotta, Joe Buissink, Susan Stripling...and the list goes on. It would be nearly impossible to pick just one.

My list would contain photographers to shadow from the hallowed halls of UHH itself.
No less respected tho they are not famous.

There is no Joe McNamara that is a Nikon Ambassador - you must mean Joe McNally.

I shadow the photographer I was last year - hoping to improve on and learn from all the things I did - both right and wrong. I am happy when I can find fault and build on that. It means I am still progressing. I've used this approach for the last 25 of my 52 years as a photogapher. It never gets old. I rarely try to duplicate something someone else did, other than maybe their business model. I do enjoy the work of all of the above, and more.

That being said, I particularly enjoyed Jill Greenberg's creative approach to subject AND lighting in her series of pics of crying children entitled End Times

https://www.jillgreenberg.com/end-times

and Dave Hill, who took that "look" and combined it with some humor, lots of staging, flawless compositing, and a whole lot of creativity to take that "shiny" high contrast look to a whole new level

These two were quite often copied about 8 yrs ago, and you are likely to have seen Jill Greenberg's portraits of kids, horses and other animals. Dave Hill's work not so much.

You make a good point. I have seen much talent in the short time I have been a member. I am not familiar by names as yet though.

I totally I agree. I am always looking where improvements can be made in my own photos, the learning process is never ending. I do not compare myself to these people or copy them, but I do find inspiration in their work and knowing they were once just starting, etc. And they sometimes share little pieces of knowledge that can be helpful to a less experienced person.

I very much enjoyed your two examples and you were right, I was familiar with Jill Greenberg's series and not as much with the work of Dave Hill. However, I think his composites are excellent and enjoyed viewing them.
