I think I would crop a little closer, because the duck is so good on download, and much of the water is not necessary. If you could see more detail under water, it would be fine!...another good shot!

Thanks for taking a look and your suggestion Bob.

Nice photo. Try cropping so the duck is looking more into the bottom left corner and the wake trails out towards the opposite corner.

I agree but also understand the appeal of the patterns in the water. I think you could preserve some of the water patterns and improve the comp as suggested - a win win.

What a cute little fella. Why is he all alone? Usually you see a gaggle of these little guys following mom and/or dad. Any idea what gives the water that beautiful color?

Not to worry, his siblings and Mom were close at hand. The water in the lake has incredible clarity and the sky that day was a bright blue, perhaps that helped the coloration. It's the nicest lake of all the Finger Lakes IMO.

Agreed. But I suppose it depends on whether the duck is the subject or the entire photo. I have quite a few similar shots where I intentionally do not crop in order to be able to keep interesting water or sky or whatever in a shot as well. Hey, we can always have it both ways with digital now can't we?

Thanks for your thoughts CanonTom. i believe I will be keeping two separate versions of the image.

Very pretty and love the water too. I like it this way and it would be great cropped too, to highlight the duck. Beautiful either way!
