I rode the train in 2012 and it was quite a ride. I made the whole trip standing in the open flatcar. I wouldn't even think about eating. There are too many photo opportunities that pass by much too quickly. We went a considerable ways past the Royal Gorge Bridge but seems to me the trip only took a couple hours. Would do it again if I'm ever out that way.

Thank you for your reply. If I can get one more visit to God's country in, I do want to ride the 'Gorge'.
As far as the run up from Denver with the 844 for Cheyenne's Frontier Days, I managed to chase the 844 once (and the 3985 a couple of times) but never rode behind them. I ran a business in Cheyenne which gave me photo ops when I had time. On the other hand, as far as riding behind them goes, the busiest couple of weeks during the year wasn't Christmas, it was Frontier Days. Riding the train would have been a bad move on my part.
Thank you for your reply. If I can get one more vi... (show quote)

Good excuse and understandable. There's been days when I've had to work to I hear you. I was all set to give the 844 a chase last year when it made a run to Pocatello but something got in my way. I was going to try to catch it chugging over that high pass in WY but didn't make it. I'm going to try to catch it this year somewhere - gotta look at the schedule and see where it's going.

It looks like a lot of fun. I haven't been to that part of the country in 50-years.

'Tis a lot of fun and we're almost even - I haven't been out of this part of the country for 40 years and it may be another 40 before it happens again.

The lady was not "sucked" into the path of the engine. She was standing on the track with the engine still 10-20 feet or so from her. (A picture was taken which proves this.)

Well, okay. A picture is worth a thousand words so your evidence wins even without the picture which I didn't see. Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't there and wasn't trying to sensationalize it. What I heard on the news was that the lady was standing too close to the track and it was suspected she was pulled into the path of the train but then I guess it doesn't matter either way - it was still tragic. Must've been some of that fake news.

We also did the whole trip in the open cars. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed every minute of it.

If you are going to make the run to Utah this year your timing could be perfect. The union Pacific is planning to have #4014, a "Big Boy", running for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the trans-continental rr.

Thank you for that information Rich. I appreciate it. I'm making a note to try and be at Sherman Hill when the run to Ogden occurs in May.
