Royal Gorge Railroad...

This train leaves the station in Canon City, goes down into Royal Gorge just past the bridge and cable car and heads back up to the station in Canyon City. It has a diner car so meals are served. I don't recall just how long the trip takes down and back up but it is several hours. There are open air cars and closed cars in the event the weather turns bad. The stream that flows alongside the train is the Arkansas River. A visit to their website reveals all the details, allows you to make reservations, tickets, and it reopens for the season next week. https://royalgorgeroute.com/

Backing up a level, there's more information and even some videos to view: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1&q=Royal+Gorge+Train

The train was out of operation for 22 years and a young man bought and revived it. My wife and I went on that first run after it was reopened. It has been much improved since then and added a lot of cars and services that weren't available when we rode it.

It's an enjoyable, slow ride, and a pleasant way to experience the Gorge and not nearly as scary as being on the shaky bridge looking down as long as you don't mind being snuggled between rock walls on both sides, often only inches away.

Nice shots!
and thanks for reminding me of the one railroad I missed (that I didn't want to) while I lived in the area for 15 years

Well, Rich, thanks for the visit and kind words and I'm sorry you missed riding this one. It's a relaxing journey. Did you get to ride the yearly trip up to Cheyenne Days Rodeo on the 844? It makes that run every year, down and back up twice. Not sure how a person gets on it but also not sure I like the idea of that old engine pulling me along at 100 mph. Last year some lady was taking pics along the route and got sucked into the draft and killed, poor soul. You just need to schedule a trip back here. You can catch the Amtrak Zephyr in LA to here and back and for sure get caught up on your train ride quota real quick in just a matter of a few days. I bet it'd be fun.

Thank you for your reply. If I can get one more visit to God's country in, I do want to ride the 'Gorge'.
As far as the run up from Denver with the 844 for Cheyenne's Frontier Days, I managed to chase the 844 once (and the 3985 a couple of times) but never rode behind them. I ran a business in Cheyenne which gave me photo ops when I had time. On the other hand, as far as riding behind them goes, the busiest couple of weeks during the year wasn't Christmas, it was Frontier Days. Riding the train would have been a bad move on my part.

It looks like a lot of fun. I haven't been to that part of the country in 50-years.

The lady was not "sucked" into the path of the engine. She was standing on the track with the engine still 10-20 feet or so from her. (A picture was taken which proves this.)
