stumbo ... you are 100% correct ... both are beautiful places. My buddy & I did a trip last year out to the SoWest with Arches & Canyonlands both on the agenda. They were fantastic. But thanks for the suggestion.

My buddy & I are planning a photo tour starting in New England & heading SoWest to the Cactus Forrest near Tucson, then heading Northerly to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Mesa Verde, Badlands in SD, Grand Tetons, Yellow Stone, Glacier NP, up the Rockies into Canada for Jasper & Bannf NPs before turning Easterly back across Canada to New England.

Looking for suggested sights along those routes that might include great Rt 66 sights, old trains, old cars or motorcycles, wildlife or other photo opportunities along the way.

Dream trip. Take your time and stop often. Don't get in a huge hurry. Watch the sunrises and sunsets.

Thanks David ... we this is the 2nd trip I've done with my buddy ... good news is we tend to be flexible ... stop often as you say ... & take more photos than we'll ever use ... & we are perfectly willing to change our schedule if something worthwhile comes along. Thanks for the good wishes. PS: Used to live outside of Austin ... been gone over 20 years & still miss it.

So, living in Oklahoma for the last 2 years, within an hour of Route 66, came across these in a roadside souvenir shop. If we had had these before we went to California last February for my dad's funeral, our trip back would have been MUCH different. And we still travelled Route 66 as much as we could. Web addresses are included on the pages I photo'd.

And don't discount the amazing scenery and photo opps on OK, there's some great stuff here. Safe travels to you.

cowboydid2 ... Wow!!!!! Just went to look at one of the links on the photo ... excellent. As often as I've looked for Rt 66 sites, I've never seen that one!!!! Going to look at all their products tomorrow. Thank you. And a question for you given you live in OK ... a friend of mine stopped at a Rt 66 museum in OK that was supposed to be excellent. Unfortunately, she can't remember where it was. Any idea? Thanks for the suggestions.

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say it was probably the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City. It covers over a city block, including what is basically a small turn of the century frontier town, with a separate warehouse containing blacksmithing and farming equipment and machinery. Be prepared to devote at least a couple of hours to exploring all the buildings. (And that's all I'm going to say about that, don't want to ruin it for you.)

Outstanding Cowboydid2 ... several definite stops. Appreciate the additional text.

PS: Also explored the 2 websites & purchased the map series & a couple of books. Thanks.

Sounds like an amazing trip, and many of my recommendations have already been noted. When (not IF) you go to Waterton, take the cruise on Waterton Lake. When you drive the Icefields Parkway, go to the Peyto Lake vista point. My go-to reference for planning road trips is the book "The Most Scenic Drives in America" published by Readers Digest. The book contains a wealth of information. Don't be concerned about the publisher; it's not a "geezer cruising in a Buick" book. Have a great trip!

Thank you DJPhoto ... look like excellent suggestions. Some time ago, I did see a reference to "The Most Scenic Drives in America" but had since forgotten. So thank you for that suggestion as well as for Waterton & the other destinations you mentioned. All great advice. Thank you for responding.

I do hope you keep us up to date on travel plans, perhaps to possibly do quick meet and greets with some of your fellow Hogs that live near your destinations?

Thanks for the comment Cowboydid2. Beyond the challenge of coordinating schedules, I don't have contact info. I've thought of sending updates to those who contributed ... but haven't figured out how to do private messaging on this site. I've tried it twice, but got no responses.

A couple of people suggested posting updates as we go along, but I've not been happy with PP on my laptop (mostly poor screen & older eyes), so I'm looking at new laptops (but not rushing it) or doing PP after I get back & can see them on my good monitor.

At this juncture, the trip is in flux due to the feedback I've gotten. For example your suggestions made me realize OK is a bigger Rt 66 attraction than I thought. And I was flooded with sites in AZ from other users, which we're trying to decide on. We're going to have to skip quite a few to stay under a month & a half.

If you'd like to meet, send a private message with contact & I'll try to coordinate. We're picking up another friend for the OK portion & we're tentatively stopping at 3 museums (in Miami; Clinton & Elk City that you mentioned & possibly the Interpretive Center in Chandler), plus quick stops that catch our eye.

Thanks again for your input & to all the UHH'ers who have so kindly made suggestions.
