select wand tool in PS. Go up to option bar on the towards the middle on the right. Hit select and mask. Play with the settings when the new screen pops up. I just cut out about 50 pics of cats using this for work and it was a life savor.

Hi :) I just recently had to do this. I watched a youtube tutorial that helped me a lot. It was a bit time consuming but it worked. Here is the link...

Good luck!

I think nobody mentioned it yet, and it doesn't make a perfect work, but it several ways makes a decent job if not for printing: https://www.remove.bg/

At least you can play with it and see how it turns out.

I've found the Eraser tool in PS to be quite easy and adequate. I used it in this post and thread. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-573508-1.html

Get an iPhone and bokeh the background ...

How dare you bokeh a dog's background. Mutt or pedigree they all need love. (I'm joking per that lame iPhone Ad of course.)

Photo shop training channel is your friend. PSTC is a channel on youtube and he has short videos on most everything. If you are working from a laptop you can start the video and follow along just like you were in class. Stop the teacher, back up and work your project with his help. It really is easy and fun.
Not knowing just what you are working with, it may be easier to make the dog a smart object and merge into a solid background. An other easy way is to use a color mask to chose or, mask with a color channel. Without seeing your image it is hard to recommend the best approach, but try the Photoshop Training Channel you will be glad you did.

Depends on the subject. For a smooth haired dog it should be simple to select the dog, then reverse the selection. This makes the selection the background. Then do what you want with it. A curly headed or fluffy animal is harder. This is in PSE.

It's one of those things that can either be a matter of a few minutes, or if you are super fussy AND you have a difficult image where the tonal and color values of the subject are close to the background it can be a labor of love.

Here is a way a perfectionist handles a subject with moderate challenge, using On1:

And this is how it can be done in Photoshop:

In either case it is usually not difficult - just tedious

That last one is a real winner. I just wish these guys wouldn't talk so fast.

There's a free program that's fairly easy to learn and to use called, "Picture Cutout Guide Lite".

I use the 'pen tool' in Photoshop to select the primary object and then create a 'path', select inverse and delete everything outside of my path. Takes a few minutes but works pretty well.

Quick Selection tool should work just fine, just like any of the other tools in PS! The Quick selection tool actually does just that, makes a really quick job of it!
