I am trying to find a user friendly way to remove the background of an image. For example, I want to remove the background of a photo of a dog. Quick tools of PS is not very friendly. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

On1 or Topaz will do it very easily.

I've replaced backgrounds in PS. I haven't seen a user friendly way to do it. I started with the magic wand tool to select the background. I then switch to making more refined selections to precisely outline the subject that I want to keep in the photo. I have more detailed instructions if you want them.

It's one of those things that can either be a matter of a few minutes, or if you are super fussy AND you have a difficult image where the tonal and color values of the subject are close to the background it can be a labor of love.

Here is a way a perfectionist handles a subject with moderate challenge, using On1:

And this is how it can be done in Photoshop:

In either case it is usually not difficult - just tedious

The ease of taking out the background depends on the background. If it is mostly lighter or darker or different color than the main subject it can be relatively easy. If not, it can be tedious work.

And highly structured backgrounds are more difficult.

It might be easier if you posted a sample of a typical picture you want to work with.

Or could you post it here so others of us can learn too? It’s something I’ve struggled with since getting into this last year. Thank you. And thanks for this great question.

on1 Just draw a line for what you want to remove and another for what you want to keep. Simple.

There are many ways to do it in PS. Including drawing a line with the pen tool or lasso too ..which can be very tricky to do correctly. There is a whole tutorial in Lynda dedicated to selecting.
