Same here. I hear a lot of people say they organize their photos by date, but I haven't a clue what I did on any given date. The only way I can find out what I was doing is to look at photo and let the metadata tell me when it was taken. (Using LR I can search metadata for that information).

I just use Windows Explorer (no cataloger). There are a many fields you can view, including tags, which is searchable. Other fields are sortable.
I've scanned many pictures of when the kids were little, for the ones where the date was not written on the back of the photo, I'M LOST!
I LOVE the date taken/modified fields for digital files! (Plus a few other fields.)
<Hmmmm. Now I'll have to look to see if "date taken" is modifiable!>

I consider that a form of cloud backup. Certainly useful (and probably more reliable) but I prefer to use local media for my primary backup.
(I also use flickr for a lot of my shots).

I don't count images on Flickr as a backup for several reasons... they are all JPG, they are difficult to download if needed, and have always ended up missing EXIF data once downloaded, and my Flickr images are reduced in size from the original raws.

For backups of my images:

1. I keep a Time Machine backup of my system & images on a 24x7 connected external disk, 4 TB gives me backups from 2017 till today, a fresh incremental is taken automatically every hour.

2. Monthly I run a second external backup of images & critical data only stored on a 2 TB external disk kept in a fire proof/water proof box stored on a shelf.

3. I also maintain a cloud backup of my system, including images, stored in the cloud as a versioned backup on Crashplan, roughly 1.8 TB backed up currently with multiple versions of files. (depending on file changes)

I have performed tests on all backup restores, easy to find what I need mostly from my Time Machine disk, but made sure to test restore from my cloud storage and the drive that gets disconnected.

Note: Having good backups (multiple locations) is important, but knowing you can restore from them when needed is VERY important!

Yes! "Date Taken" is modifiable, as well as "Date Acquired", which I can use as date scanned. Whoo-hoo!
Gotta love metadata!

I use folders. Depends what the subject is. If its churchs it goes in the church folder. Horses go in the horse folder. If you start shooting trains start a train folder. I can always find what ever Im looking for.

The keywords in PSE start with folders, places, people, events, etc. then you add names to that, to create sub-folders etc.

I don't use a cataloger, I put keywords in the tag field in the metadata.
Having the images in subject folders make them easy to find, for me.
