Un clip one side of the strap from the bag,
Put the strap through the hood, or hoods,
Clip the strap back on to the bag.
Hood or hoods are on 3the strap, NOT in the bag.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND NOW?

Why?
Sounds silly when the hood easily reverses on all the lenses and bayonets securely that way. Also the correct hood is with the proper lens rather than trying to figure out what goes where.
That is why the ?
Just really sounds awkward to clip hoods on the bag separately from the lenses and difficult to mount on the lens vs if it is on the correct lens just mount the lens, turn the correct hood around and be done with it.

OK! !. un clip one side of the strap from the bag.

2. Put the strap thru the hood or hoods.

3. Re clip the strap to the bag.

NOW the hood or hoods are on the strap, NOT in the bag.

Do you understand now?

Again as I just answered above.

I have 5 lenses in my bag but, only have 2 lens hoods. One for 2 lenses the other for 3 lenses Why should I carry 5 hoods When all I need is 2?

Because each hood matches the lens, because they reverse and take up absolutely no additional space and finally as said before the rapidity of accessing the hoods by dismounting the hood from the bag, trying to not drop or unstring the other hoods reclip the strap then mount the hood and then reverse the whole thing as lenses change is why.
Too much effort when each matched hood nests with the proper lens perfectly and is ready to go with no extra tasks or effort.
That is why.

IIRC, the HN-23 hood for a Nikon 85mm/1.8 does not reverse over the lens. So reversing isn't ALWAYS an option.

I recently purchased a lens hood for my 50mm. I have the lens on my camera and want to know if will hurt anything if I leave the lens hood on in the camera bag?

Is the lens hood reversible; i.e., can you slip it over the lens threaded end backward, then rotate it into solid position? All my Nikon lenses (except my 85mm 1.4) allow this. I know this is pretty elemental, but in 75 years I've discovered many similar no brainers, frequently much later than I should have.

All my lens have reversible hoods except 50 mm. That was the one I was concerned about. The hood build seems strong enough.

That is good news about lens hood for 50mm lens. I have one I purchase with. I use it occasionally on my 50 mm.
