When traveling, I take my laptop, an external hard drive, and a few SD cards. At the end of a day of shooting, I insert the camera's SD card into the laptop and put the images onto a file in the external hard drive. I keep hearing about a card reader. What is the process for using one and do I really need to? Thank you for your insights!

You don't need a card reader. It's built into your lap top. But you do need to copy/ back up your photos, not just put them on an external drive. I'd put a copy on your last top also.

I attach a card reader to a port in my TV, and get a really large image. Also,it works as a slideshow.

I have a sd card slot in my PC but I use a USB3 card reader because it is much faster.

Very Interesting.
How much faster?
Many minutes?
(Obviously it depends on how many image files are transferred.)
