Are not good card readers much faster than SD slots in the computer? And, readers accept a variety of card types. I've always used my card slot, but just ordered a UGREEN card reader, due tomorrow. Did I waste my $16?
One reason for at least HAVING an external card reader available is in case the internal one on your laptop fails. They are so small, why not have on in your bag or pocket?
Okay, another reason...you can transfer stuff to a computer that does not have a card reader.

I have an external card reader that I used at work. It now sits in the drawer at home.
If the reader in my laptop dies on vacation, I'll wait until I get home. I have nine cards.
I don't put images on any computer other than mine, they all have readers.
So, needless to carry it in the camera/computer bag.
I use the same setup that you described. My thoughts are that aq separate external device is not only unnecessary, it would take money that might be useful in putting out a GAS attack.

No, I find card readers to be faster than any other method and I have used one on my computer to download my cards for years. Well worth the money for me. If you are downloading raw images, the card makes a huge difference. If I am just doing casual snaps that won’t need processing, I just put them on my iPad. If you have raw files or another reason to do processing on your computer, a card reader is the way to go. Bab

You say needless. Others might say "Good idea!"

Yes, that's what
I said.
Others may indeed say good idea.
That's what makes us individuals.
FYi, if your built in card reader stops working, it is usually cheaper to get an external reader than have it repaired. In addition, if the card type that your camera uses is not compatible with the built in one. Mine would not find an SDXC card my newer camera used. so I bought a new external reader that said it was compatible. This worked fine.

True, much cheaper, unless maybe you replace it yourself.
So far I'm good, no SDXC cards.

Your first response was pointless, as have been other responses yo have made. Goodbye.

Apparently some folks are individuals,
but some others are not ! If the great
mass of individuals decline to approve
your membership, then you are all on
your own. Certificate of Individuality
denied ! YMMV at your own risk. Us of
card readers, or not, is an enormously
complex life decision. Take care !
