The BBF is easy to set up. Its in the Custom Settings Menu "a" (a5 on mine) "Auto Focus Activation". Once your in the screen, there are 2 choices - Shutter/AF-On or AF-On Only.

Hello fellow hoggers. While I am familiar with BBF on my D7200 , I will getting a d810 next month. While has a AF on button of it's own I'm wondering if I have to disable the half shutter function? Thanks for your input.

I have the D750 and it says right in the manual, when then the camera is set for BBF the half shutter focus will be ignored. I would assume all Nikons are like that.

Although I skipped over the 810, Go to the menu (not having a camera in front of me)...on my D3s, D500, D850 and D5) Go to AutoFocus AF Activation,(off), within that option there is 2 options (Shutter/AF-On or AF/Only. Select Af/Only to de-couple the shutter button. If memory serves me well.

The D750 has AEL/AFL. I think I had to turn off c1 and turn on f4 in order to keep AE enabled the shutter release. Cause c1 also deactivats AE on shutter button, I think. I seem to recall when setting it up to BBF and used c1, I also lost AE lock on shutter... f4 would enable AE back to shutter leaving AF On to the AEL/AEF button. I'd have to look to be sure. I could be wrong, to many bodies to keep track of :( there by... no, all Nikon's aren't the same.

No you don't, just ignore it and press it all the way when you are ready to take the shot.

That sounds wrong to me.

I have the 800 and you set the AF On to AF-ON Only. Should be a4:Auto Focus Activation in the menu. That should set the AF-ON to focus and then the shutter release to trip the shutter only.

As you press the shutter button, you will

No. It's electrical.

I believe you will need to disable the focus on the shutter button if you don't want it to try to refocus when you half-press to set your exposure.

If you want only BFF, you have to disable the shutter button focus. But the are 4 shooting menus and you can be selective. For instance I use one of mine for P&S and for this one the shutter button focus is operative.
