Hello fellow hoggers. While I am familiar with BBF on my D7200 , I will getting a d810 next month. While has a AF on button of it's own I'm wondering if I have to disable the half shutter function? Thanks for your input.

I had to disable the shutter function on my Df, I imagine it would be the same on other Nikons as well. When you get your new camera the Users Manual should give you a definitive answer.
Enjoy your new gear.

No you don't, just ignore it and press it all the way when you are ready to take the shot.

Thanks but if I had focus lock and pressed the shutter button wouldn't the focus point have an opportunity to move.

Go to the manual. It has the same basic instructions for BBF as the others. I have the D810, and use BBF only.

Thanks. As I don't have the camera yet I have been looking at the manual on line and will look into that.

That's WHY you disable the shutter button AF.

I've always been able to enable half-press for
the actual exposure yet still disabling shutter
button AF, and I've done it on many different
cameras. Seems a safe bet that the D810 will
allow for that.

As you press the shutter button, you will pass the 1/2 point. How is the camera to know whether to focus or not. It is just a mechanical position, yes no ?

Generally, if you do not take autofocus off your shutter button you have to continue to hold the back button until you finish depressing the shutter button. Otherwise, pressing the shutter button will automatically refocus. If you remove autofocus from the shutter button, you do not have to keep the back button depressed.

That's what I thought. It would appear that I would have to disable it via the custom settings menu as with the d7200. I just never had a separate AF on button.

YES, you should assign the focus to the back button, AND disable the focus from the shutter button. That way, the shutter button only controls exposure, and doesn't "undo" what you focused with back button.
