I have a thick piece of foam sponge on the floor behind the driver seat of my truck on which I lay my camera and lens while driving. It works well for me although I have to stop and get out to access it.

Boy, I must be very careless. If I'm driving, it's on the floor in the back seat. If I'm a passenger, it's on the floor in the front seat. Both instances not in the bag if I think I'm going to shoot something.
Maybe I like living dangerously, but I am careful with my feet.

I am thinking KICKSTARTER !!!! A camera seat belt!!!!

NO! A CAMERA SEAT BELT/ARTICULATING GIMBAL ARM!!!!

Yeah! With a backup power supply!!!

Teathered to a tablet computer!!!

The arm will rise up through the sunroof to a height of 25 feet SO YOU NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR CAR!!!

With built in Arsenal and other useless stuff!!!!!!!

And of course anti-theft cables and an alarm!

I'll buy it!

I set my camera on the console of the car. Then as I shifted into gear it tipped into the drink holder, lens down. It was a wide angle lens with a lip. Exactly the same diameter as the holder. The holder has 3 spring loaded knobs to keep drinks steady. They sprang out above the lip of the lens. It took me 20 minutes to get the lens out. Luckily no damage. Will set my camera on the passenger seat in the future!!

Here is a query;
If I can take my straw or wool Texas cowboy hat and slip it into a hat holder just above and aft of the rear view mirror why hasn't anyone made a wire rack that sits in the same location to hold our SLRs?
The wire could be coated and it could be made to be adjustable to fit most SLRs. It would have the lens pointing down. That would allow to camera to be immediately available to shoot by just sliding it aft off the rack.
No reason to have cameras sitting in the back seat or on the floor. IMHO someone should invest in developing a simple wire camera holder like this.
Just an opinion.

Yes Sir! Even cameras should buckle their seat belt.

Put it on the floor, lens facing forward (zoom lens). That way the camera can’t fall & the longer lens will help prevent it from rolling if you stop short.

I actually did just that. In my motor home. Then one day I checked the tire pressure, and flipped the gauge into the RV as I got back in. The gauge perfectly hit the front of the lens. Broke the filter, and scratched the lens. $1800 down the tubes.

So safeguard your lenses and cameras carefully! Even a minor accident can cost big bucks.

Well, if the cage is built for a 10gal hat, wouldn't a DSLR fit as well?

I agree with others here, keep your camera on the passenger side floor, possibly next to your camera bag, if not IN your camera bag, hopefully it will be more secure if you must come to a sudden or quick Stop, it will not go Flying off of the front passenger seat. Better yet, keep it in your camera bag, on the floor BEHIND your driver's seat, due to the fact that you cannot or should not be attempting to take photos while you are driving your car.
