I put mine inside the console - keeping it on the driver's seat is just asking for trouble in the event of a quick stop.
I tried putting my camera on the driver's seat too, but the trouble was that I kept sitting on it. Now that WAS trouble.
When I have equipment in the car it is either on the floor or in the trunk in a insulated box.

Hang your camera around the passenger headrest supports if you have adjustable headrests. Won't fall off, only thing it can bounce against is the seatback.
Absolutely, and if you have a little longer strap your camera sits nicely right on the seat beside you, works like a charm and ready for shooting.

I expect to see that scene in a comedy sometime in the future. : )
When I drive with my camera in the car, I put it on the floor behind the driver. It's already on the floor, so it's not going to fall there.
That’s a good place, also front passenger side floor(only if no passenger sitting there.)
I have slid a couple cameras from the seat to the floor, stopping fast and going around corners. I now use the blanket in the back or one of several old fuzzy jackets I use for cover up, on the seats and floor, for just in case. Those things also pad the two bodies with lenses on seat when out alone, or they sit at my feet if someone else is driving.

Put it on the floor, lens facing forward (zoom lens). That way the camera can’t fall & the longer lens will help prevent it from rolling if you stop short.
And place a rolled up towel between the lens and the firewall to cushion against fast stops.
Yes, I've used a terry towel wrapped around my camera with lens to protect them in my car.
