Im an avid kayaker and wanted a camera with a long zoom for wildlife pics while kayaking. Price was an object because I knew there was a chance it would eventually end up in the drink and I found the Fujifilm Finepix S9900w. It was relatively inexpensive, about $300 if I remember. It had some great features that some more expensive superzooms didn’t, like an EVF, and it’s 50x zoom gave it a 24-1220mm effective range. I got some great shots with that camera, before I eventually capsized in Juniper Springs and lost it. Since then I’ve tried several others, the Nikon Coolpix took great shots and also had a pretty decent 42x zoom, but eventually enough drips and splashes killed it. Next it was a Nikon 1 AW which I used an adapter for an old Nikkor 70-300 lens. It worked but was cumbersome and unwieldy. Recently I delved into the MFT world with a Lumix G-85. I love it for many reasons and will continue to take it, but still wasn’t getting the reach I wanted. I was pining for my old Fuji and ran across the Finepix S1. A little older and bulkier than the S9900w but a better camera and it’s weathersealed. It is a little big for a pocket and they don’t make it anymore, but I got one in excellent condition on Ebay for under $220.

Fuji may not MAKE the Finepix S1 anymore, but you sure can buy it new, still. Check Amazon!!!

To my knowledge - it is the ONLY bridge, which is weather-sealed - so, it's not going anywhere. It also uses a rechargeable battery, and has a pretty good zoom range - 24-1200 (FF equiv.) … a good deal!! Your other Fuji - I believe - uses 4 AAs - right? … May be why it's a bit smaller, Fly ….

Hi Chris. Thought I'd try to attach a few examples for you - a couple taken with the Lumix TZ80 and a couple with a Sony HX90v. Sadly I don't seem able to "store original" probably because I only have mobile internet on my phone. They should however still show what can be done with small cameras - P & S as many like to call them! I don't think they're bridge cameras though - my opinion is that bridge means a camera between the small P & S and a DSLR usually looking a bit like the DSLR but not having a removable lens. Naturally they won't fit in any pocket! Cheers JohnR

John … I mentioned in an earlier post on this thread - we all seem to define Bridges differently. I like to think of them as ANY compact camera which uses a fixed zoom lens. I do realize many folks think of the term to apply to ONLY those which look like (and act) like small DSLRs. Trouble is - some of those - don't even have VFs - so, since one has to fudge the definition there, I just decided to broaden it further.

My understanding is - the Sony HX99 WILL fit into a shirt pocket. Is your HX90v similar to that one?
It has a 20MP sensor, and a zoom range of 24-720. Is that what yours has, John?

When you click on Store Original - it simply saves a copy of the EXIF to the picture as you upload it.

Dude - as of this morning you have 18 topics in the first two pages in this forum. I suggest you start your own forum, maybe calling it ChrisT's Genuinely Interesting Discussions in Photography - and stop posting your mostly inane topics there. Or even better yet, go out and use the cameras you talk about. If your goal is to improve your skills, staying home and sitting in front of a computer is not going to get you there. Actually taking pictures just might.

This is not intended as a slam, Chris, it's just intended to give others a chance to post real-world questions, and for knowledgeable folks to respond and discuss those questions.

No one really cares about who makes the best bridge, mirrorless, superzoom, hypothetical cameras, what Pentax is in the works, Pink/Orange/Violet casts on camera preview screens, F8, photographic posters, chemistry differences between Kodak Fuji Ilford, what color a camera is, and so on - these questions have a distinct flavor of "survey taking" as if you were writing a book and soliciting opinions, and nearly all of them can be answered either by searching the topics on this forum or using google. And in many cases by actually taking a camera out and using it.

Give it a rest.

This is my morning rant for today.

Eighteen, huh, Gene? … Usually, I post two at a time. But, a couple of days ago - I did post four, because I'd not posted two the day before. If you look at the dates of the posts of the other 16 or so … you will see they are all from a year ago. Obviously, someone stumbled on my list, and decided to go through and answer some of those. When they did so, it made them active, and others got interested in the topics, and decided to chime in. This has nothing to do with me, other than the fact, I posted them a year ago.

But, probably, because of complaints, by you and others, who overlooked the dates - NONE of those FOUR new ones - were EVER highlighted in the Daily Digest - more's the pity ….

Gene! Wouldn't he have to buy the cameras first before shooting with them? None of the cameras he talked about is something he would buy. No offend Chris, I know you just wanted to post those threads to help out fellow UHH

Thanks for recognizing that fact, Bebu … and thanks for your support, too …

It sounds to me like Harvey is the one selling it.

Actually I did check Amazon and they only had used. The one I got on eBay looks brand new and functions perfectly. The only downside is there was no charger with it. That’s where Amazon helped me out. A charger and two more batteries.

Oh, I see, Fly. Tell you the God's Honest, I'm not particularly interested in a Canon Powershot SX-60 HS, but, if I should happen to change my mind, I'd prefer to get one, new. I really don't trust used cameras anymore, after having been burned twice.

Oh, I see, Fly … last time I checked, they still had some new - but they may have been offered thru other sellers, of which Amazon are apprised … glad you got one, and it works well. You know, I'm sure, Adorama could've supplied you with batteries and a charger, for it. They keep a plentiful supply of that sorta thing …
