I have a Viltrox wireless remote as well as intervalometer (wired) that I have been using for years. Best part was when I added a 5DS to go with from my 70D, all I needed was a $5.00 cord. I also use Pocket Wizards on occasion when I need additional range.

If you want to pay more so all your equipment has the same name - go for it. (personally I don't like to pay $45 or $50 more just for some white paint on the front of the accessory !)

Do the research on what you are considering and see what kind of reviews are out there. You can usually tell if a negative review is coming from an advanced skills user of somebody who can't figure out how to put the batteries in correctly !

If you want a WIRED release, I believe the 6D uses the RS-80N3, which is only a release switch, with an 80cm long cable and an "N3" connector (about $50 new various places).

An alternative is the TC-80N3, which not only serves as a remote switch, but also is a Timer/Controller that can be set up to take a series of images for time lapse photography.... i.e., an intervalometer. (About $140 new, various places).

There's also the RC-6 WIRELESS (IR) release, which is very small and simple. With most cameras I'm aware of, it needs to be directed to the front of the camera and has pretty limited working distance (about 15 feet, if I recall correctly). In other words, it's basically designed to be used for selfies... self-portraits. But I imaging with care it could be used closer as a remote release.

I've got all three for use with my Canon cameras and bought them for FAR less money.... used, off eBay.

There are third party equivalents for less money too, but frankly I've never used them. The Canon items are well made and reliable. And they can be found quite cheap used.

Yes, you also could look into WiFi and just using an app on a smart phone, if you have one.

That's great. Just reading this thread and didn't know about that app. I just downloaded it and hooked it up with my 80D and it works great!

I bought the Canon brand because I needed one asap and that was all the store had. I put the battery in, used it that day in sub zero temperatures, put it in my pocket, went home, got changed and ran it through the washer. Once it dried out, it still worked. I was amazed. For me, who spends a lot of time outdoors, that was worth the extra funds. If you plan to work indoors maybe not worth it.

I have a PIXEL (Pixel Enterprise Limited, China) RF remote wireless shutter release for my Fujifilm X100T camera and Pentax cameras. It is a model TW-283/N3. I bought it with a camera connector end tip (sub-miniture stereo jack) that works for some Canon cameras too. It is sold as a Canon model. But this one also works with my Fuji Camera and my Pentax DSLRs. Also the Pentax and Fuji can be connected via different plugs on the camera (various USB) as well. But the Canon cord works for both any way. Your Canon 6D might need a different cord w/ tip that you'd need to order with the unit. I've noticed years ago than some Canon EOS cameras used the same plugged in accessories as Pentax. Check for your 6D. PIXEL brand may be found on Amazon.

I PREFER AND RECOMMEND BUYING "CANON" LENS AND ACCESSORIES FOR CANON CAMERAS. That's just me! Where are you looking? I didn't pay that much for either of my shutter releases for my Canon T5i. I got my cable release Canon RS60-E3 for $16.50 (new) and my remote release Canon RC-6 for $8.85 (new). I think I bought them off of Ebay. I might have been in the right place at the right time.

Rather than buy a name brand remote, I've always bought generic remotes, both wired and wireless. They work fine.

I think that they are all made in China.
