I have a Canon 6D and would like to get a remote switch. Canon $51, other brands $11 to $20. Has anyone had experience with non-Canon remotes?

thanks, Don

For my Canon T1i I have a Vello wired release that works fine, but went with the Vello free wave RF wireless. It works great and I don't have to be within 3 feet of the tripod or in front of the camera as with an infrared remote.

Why are you not using the built in wifi and your smart phone? Download canon connect from the canon site and you will have a great remote

Stick with Canon on this. I have used others that were less expensive and they don't last. I had a Vello, the wireless quit but still works if connected.

Typically the camera makes its own little WiFi and you log your phone onto it instead of some internet wifi connection.

If you are talking about 'remote cable releases' the cheapo ones can work fine, but, the leads if not handled carefully can fail due to being of lower quality.

I've been using a Flashpoint Wave Commander for nearly seven years now and I never had a single failure/missed shot with it. It has a range of 320 feet and I use it pretty much daily. It comes in very handy for any type of shooting, I also use it for flash shooting. It has an intervalometer and timer as well. I did pay $19.95 for it!

Rather than buy a name brand remote, I've always bought generic remotes, both wired and wireless. They work fine.

I have the 6D MKII and use this remote with it, no problems whatsoever. https://www.amazon.com/AODELAN-Shutter-Release-PowerShot-Replace/dp/B07KGC258H/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1258SSKDK2CGK&keywords=br-e1+remote&qid=1550672977&s=gateway&sprefix=br-e1%2Caps%2C161&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

I have the 6DII with wireless and also the Canon intervalometer as well ....either one will do the trick

You can also tether to your tablet or laptop directly if your wifi is poor or non-existent I would suppose.

If you want to use a remote (wired or wireless) other than wifi, I use Neewer and had no problems..

I suppose it depends on whether or not you just want to use it as a switch or as an intervolimeter. If you need the later, I completely agree that you should stick with Canon!!!!
