One of my kids just found his. He had a Skype account, and he could use it as a phone. Same ol- after he got his smartphone bundle, he put the ipod away. And kinda forgot. He also forgot his password, so it's sorta useless.
One of those age related things. He (was young and single) had that thing going all the time. But yeah, he had to load Windows itunes to do anything. Had to be careful, and rename and copy the songs before the timer killed them. Now (ld, married and bundled with the in-laws) he just sticks a card (loaded from the PC) in the side of the phone, and with his wireless earphones he's good to go.
Another Apple trick- sometimes itunes wouldm't let go of the songs- but he could burn them. Another PITA to do. Anyway, he'd burn to an ISO file, exit itunes, open the ISO in another app, and copy them out from there.

I still have two 32 GB ipods I use every single day. But then I didn't get my first smartphone until last year.

iPod is still great and quality is OK. You can use iTunes to transfer files from PC or CD, even vinyl to the iPod

use the 3.5mm jack to connect to external amplifier/ speakers or even Bluetooth to your car system etc

Itunes is pretty much useless these days. Nothing is simple about it, change something on one device and it gets changed on all the others if they are apple.
