I am actively looking for a long zoom point and shoot camera for travel. I already have semi professional camera like Nikon D810. It is kind of heavy for travel. I had been debating between Canon
SX70 HS (65X) and Nikon B700 (60X).
I looked at snap and sort web site. There point system gives more points for popularity, which is not a considerable feature for me. I am looking for a good image quality and long zoom at least 60X. Price range around $500.
Can expert and experience members of this group help me select either of these two or a better choice within my price range and preferably 60X or longer zoom.

Appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks

I had a similar situation a few years back while in Big Bend. I was using my F1 Nikon Mirrorless with the 10-100mm, but came up lacking on really long shots. When I came home I ordered the Nikon P900 with 2000mm lens, but found it too large and bulky, so returned it and got the P610 with the 1600mm lens. It is a great camera and reaches out to get your subject. Check it out.

The Canon mirrorless like this are selling the most in Japan. They know good products and travel a lot.

Panasonic FZ1000 is an incredible do-all camera. The 1” sensor gives exceptional images and the Leica lens (25-400) has the ability through the iZoom setting to reach 800. The AF is one of the best in the business and the 4K video is awesome. Have had it only 6 months and greatly impressed by the auto settings but continue to learn more about the available features which are more intuitive than the competition IMHO and the best bang-for-the-buck. Have found it to be great for all my photographic needs, including travel! Can’t say enough about this gem.

Have you personally used it? What is your experience? I was very much interested in this camera but I was concerned about two things. Price and one of the reviews I read said that the images quality deteriorates at high zoom.

Sorry no! I suggested it because it seems to have the widest zoom range of all. Personally I think it's too big and the large zoom range actually scares me. Since you asked for a lot of zoom. Personally I would go for something with 3x zoom or less and pocketable. The P100 isn't pocketable.

The Canon SX70, does not have a hot shoe for an external flash unit. Only a pop up flash. A bummer, IMO. The SX60 has a hot shoe. And the Panasonic FZ80.

There are several differences between the 60 and 70. You can compare here:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Canon_SX70_HS_vs_Canon_SX60_HS/BHitems/1435399-REG_1080919-REG
The 70 has 20 MP vs 16 for the 60. The 60 has a hot shoe, the 70 doesn't. The 60 has more outputs (HDMI, AV) and other differences.

FWIW - I specifically wanted a hot shoe when I got the SX50HS. It can use the same strobe as my 80D and T2i. However, I doubt I've used the external flash on it more than 3 times. Of course, that is me.

Canon SX60, and Panasonic FZ80. These two shoot JPEG and RAW, have very long focal lengths, a viewfinder and hot shoe. I think the newest Canon SX70, does not have a hot shoe for an external flash unit? The above mentioned cameras should cost below $500.

With Canon's Power Shot SX60 HS digital camera, you will zoom like never before to see craters on the moon, wildlife from afar and your child's face on a crowded school stage. The Power Shot SX60 HS gives you the reach to capture it all. The camera's astonishing 65x optical zoom (21mm-1365mm) wide-angle lens with Optical Image Stabilizer combine tremendous flexibility with portable ease. A 16.1 megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon's latest DIGIC 6 image processor together create the Canon HS System for excellent low-light performance. Advanced technology including Zoom Framing Assist and Intelligent IS help you track and capture clear, steady long shots. Shoot realistic 1080p full HD video recorded at 60p. USM and VCM technology help ensure fast, silent zooming and focus during recording, and, in a first for a Power Shot model, you can attach an optional external microphone. Quickly share everything you capture. The Power Shot SX60 HS is Wi-Fi and NFC enabled with an easy Mobile Device Connect button.

From a happy SX60 owner/user that statement might be a little enthusiastic. Moon craters? Maybe the really big ones.

I have the Lumix fz1000 and it is great. However, I just got a Lumix FZ80 for $300 and it is the a wonderful camera and a 60x power zoom. I would take the FZ80, which does everything but the dishes, if weight and size matters. Never been more impressed with a camera.

Snapsort never was very good, but last I checked it was horrible. Try the side-by-side comparison at DPReview instead, but you'll have to draw you're own conclusions.

I suggest considering sensor size first, bells and whistles second. Some p&s cameras have sensors no larger than a cell phone sensor. Good luck cropping or enlarging.

There are several models with a 1" sensor, which is where I'd go with a p&s. Top of the heap undoubtedly is the Sony RX10iv, although several Sony models with a 1" sensor and different feature sets are available.

TheB700 is $450 on sale,

https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/compact-digital-cameras/coolpix-b700.html

It appears similar to a P7800 which I have. I got tired of lugging my DSLR and left it behind on a trip to Newfoundland. Got many nice shots under varying conditions. Same for a trip to Malta. And, Europe. I like the view finder for those situations in which the sun blanks-our the viewing screen. Also used it during a concert to get shots of singers on a large concert hall. It did almost as well as the DLSR except at very high enlargements when photo editing. I also like it's compactness - almost shirt-pocket sized, in fact, I did carry it that way when I wore an REI outdoor shirt. I missed in-camera GPS and added aGPS device that plugs into the accessory socket.

Disclaimer: I'm an amateur; many scenes in the Switzerland collection were shirt through train windows and highly edited.

Good luck.
/Roger

Can't help but ask. By my calculation, a 60x zoom would be about 1500mm. Why in the world would you ever need anything even remotely close to that focal length? So you're looking for a small, light camera for travel? What about the tripod you'll need to bring along to steady it at anything above 150mm? And at full zoom it will have to be a $2000 carbon fiber model with sandbags. A 1500mm lens would be required for... wait, I can't think of anything. It is the classic solution looking for a problem.

You sound like someone who has never had the opportunity to use a superzoom camera. My SX50, which has a 50X Zoom, did a great job for me on a Safari I took in Kenya in 2017. (Just one example of a situation where the long reach is helpful). The 50X zoom fully extended is equivalent to 1200mm. Of course, the majority of pictures, all handheld, were not anywhere near full zoom. But the reach is great to have. Canon says the 65X zoom in the SX60 is equivalent to 1365mm. No one expects the pictures to be perfect at full zoom, especially with the very small sensor. The Nikon P900 has an 83X zoom and the P1000 has a 125X optical zoom.

There a a whole mass of cheap (very cheap) point and shoots that no one would ever steal. I have A Kodak with lens stability, 12 mg, view finder and LCD, optional “grip”, hot shoe and pop up flash (both). Under $30 at Goodwill.
The are other more sophisticated cameras like the Nikon discussed elsewhere and the Canon, Panasonic plus Sony and Leica. If budget is not a consideration new is better. Fuji has made similar “bridge” cameras for years as well. Many have “macro” or close focus
options as well. They are slow in the memory department and not “pocket cameras” but if you don’t mind looking more the tourist, do-able.
