Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic all make good products. My birding groups are very high on the P900. It's right around $500 on Amazon and has 63x zoom. The newer P1000 is closer to $1k. Personally, I like the Panasonic Lumix series and you might want to look at the FZ80 at 60x zoom for about $300.

One of the resons I voted out P900 was that it does not record in RAW mode. RAW is one of the feature I am looking for.

I just spent yesterday shooting photos with a B700 from a blind. Birds were looking for sunflower seeds at my feeders. The photos are sharp, the camera is lightweight, I was holding the camera with 1 hand zoomed out to the equivalent of 1,400mm. It goes up to 20mb jpeg, also shoots RAW. I didn't open any RAW files yet, but the icon indicated they were 31mb each! (It is my neighbor's camera, and I, like you, am considering something lighter than my FF set-up.)

Canon powershot sx60.

*stolen from a description*

With Canon's Power Shot SX60 HS digital camera, you will zoom like never before to see craters on the moon, .....The Power Shot SX60 HS is Wi-Fi and NFC enabled with an easy Mobile Device Connect button.

That is one of cameras I am looking for now.

Do you want/need a viewfinder? Some of the cameras mentioned do not have viewfinders and rely on a back screen. I find the back screen difficult to use in bright sunlight. I know I’m not using the proper terms—feel free to correct me!

That is a very good point. I am nor comfortable with the fold out screen either. I need to have a view finder. In my opinion that is one way to reduce the shake of the camera. That is one of the feature I should be looking for in the camera.

Thanks for the reply.

The B700 has been replaced by the A900. While I am a Canon shooter, if you are already comfortable and plan to keep your D810, I would recommend sticking with you brand. The A900 is under $400 new.

I will look into it. Need to know the zoom ratio. I dont mind a different camera other than Nikon as long as it has a shorter learning curve.

Wow, appreciate your reply. You are probably the first one recommending Nikon. I have used several Nikon cameras including D2, D7100, D610, D810 and D4. This time I was debating if I should stay with Nikon.

Thanks for the reply again.

In that case I will go wichever is cheaper (refurbished or new).

I voted out P900 because I am looking for RAW capability.

I am actively looking for a long zoom point and shoot camera for travel. I already have semi professional camera like Nikon D810. It is kind of heavy for travel. I had been debating between Canon
SX70 HS (65X) and Nikon B700 (60X).
I looked at snap and sort web site. There point system gives more points for popularity, which is not a considerable feature for me. I am looking for a good image quality and long zoom at least 60X. Price range around $500.
Can expert and experience members of this group help me select either of these two or a better choice within my price range and preferably 60X or longer zoom.

Appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks

Vasant

Sony just brought out their new version of the HX-90 V. The HX-99V, has a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens, pop up viewfinder that is very helpful, and shoots RAW if you want it.
I have the HX-90V and use it all the time when I travel. Bought a Nikon Coolpix pouch with magnetic closures to hold it. Has a belt loop that allows me to be hands free.

Do they (Sony) make cameras of longer zoom? I am looking for at least 1200mm. Good for birds.

Panasonic FZ1000. I had a FZ150 that did a great job in Alaska. Really nice images, Leica lens.

Olympus and Lumix micro 4/3 cameras are very nice cameras. I have a PenF that is excellent. I saw a Lumix GX9 with a Panasonic 12-60mm (24-120mm FF). (1 k$ as a kit) I have this lens and the Nikon 16-80mm lens. They are my favorite general purpose lenses and have nearly the same field of view. There is also a Panasonic 100-300mm lens (200-600mm FF). THe lenses are quite small and are every bit as good as my Nikon equipment. Don't forget to look at the m.Zuiko lenses as well.

The Canon SX70, does not have a hot shoe for an external flash unit. Only a pop up flash. A bummer, IMO. The SX60 has a hot shoe. And the Panasonic FZ80.

I would recommend the Canon SX70 or the SX60. The SX70 apparently has a much improved (EVF) viewfinder, and has had a resolution increase to 20 Megapixels. The question to ask is, how much would you use a hot shoe on your travel camera? If the answer is not so much, get the newer SX70. I suspect you will use your DSLR for most low light shots in your regular shooting. If a hot shoe is still really something you need on this particular camera, get the SX60. Interestingly, Canon has alternated between hot shoe & no hot shoe with the various generations of the SX super zoom line.
