But isn't part of the lure the richness in the
transparencies? Are you sure that you can
replicate that with digital?

Replicate it ? LOL. You can beat it !

I don't know much about med format digital cameras and looked up the Pentax 645Z. What is the sensor size? I note that it lists 51.7mp. Now the Nikon 850 has some 45mp on a FF sensor. How large an enlargement would be necessary to differentiate the two when viewing the same scene at the same perspective? I ask because I have compared a 24mp crop sensor to a 16mp FF and was surprised at how close these were as viewed on a 27" monitor.

Davey … the size of the sensor on a Pentax 645Z is the same as all other MF Dig Cams - approx. 54x40mm.

The Phase One - is ever so slightly bigger, but not by very much.

Regardless, the Pentax 645Z is the cheapest of ALL MF DSLRs. The cheapest MF MILC is the Fuji GFX 50R at just about four grand. The GFX-50S is $6500 (same as D5) but, remember, you still need glass as well.

Back in the day I often backpacked with a Nikon F3 and a Pentax 645 plus lenses and tripod. I'm slowly digitizing my slides and negatives and falling in love again with the images from the 645.. I've got some great lenses, all manual, and thinking about getting a digital Pentax body and perhaps some digital lenses eventually while I'm still young enough to carry the weight. I mostly shoot landscapes. Is anyone using a digital 645 with manual lenses and what do you think?

One word: Overkill. Save your money (and your back while you still have one).

Well, it's NOT in your "table" - the Pentax/Fuji MF is NOT in your table. - you WILL find it on the net if you look hard enough - I promise - but I cannot tell you exactly where .....google is your friend ...

I have already looked and found it so I am not doing it again !

The Fuji series - the GFX 100S, the GFX-50S, and the GFX R - are - I'm pretty sure - all the same - 54x40mm … if you disagree … go and look yourself. The Pentax may be smaller …

Here, now, Larry ... are you happy, now?

"The Fujifilm GFX 50R is the the rangefinder version of the company's SLR-styled GFX 50S medium format digital camera. It offers a 43.8 x 32.9mm 51.4MP CMOS sensor and uses new G-mount lenses, with a crop factor of 0.79x. It uses the same X-Processor Pro as the GFX 50S and has an 117-point contrast ..."

I don't know how much you would learn from the average 27" monitor. Perhaps more from a 4k monitor. Surly more from a print. I did read the results of a series of tests some time ago, however, that they were close. The best results I've ever seen were made from a 4" x 5" scam made on a drum scanner. The print was made on a 44" Epson printer and the results were terrific. I did a smaller print of a portion of the negative on a Canon printer and the results were equally good.

I think in the end, only printed results matter, and what you need probably depends on intended print size more than anything else.

YES, rounded off, it is 33X44 - except the Fuji and Pentax are the SAME.
