I have read about how to set up back button focus on my Nikon 7200, but I am not clear on the advantages of doing so. I have always depressed half-way and then recomposed, then release the shutter so I am pretty good at that. What benefit is back button focus?

Some cameras offer a. full-time auto focus feature that keeps the camera lens in focus as you adjust subjects, etc. Others the back button works wonders for.

Cheers!

Its so fast and easy to just undo the setting if I hand
my camera to someone, which I will rarely do. To get
a pic of me and my wife ........

In most camera, if you use the super-auto-everything
"green mode" ... which is for many reasons the right
way to hand off your camera to a nonphotographer ...
the green mode defeats all your personal customizing.
It will put the AF back onto the shutter button ... only
until you quit the green mode, then everything is still
customized by you.

Really none but a lot of folks have fooled themselves into there is one.

I use a Nikon D5600 and shoot mainly birds in the back yard. It's set on BBF and AF continuous and continuous shutter release. Works best for me.

In the time it will take you to read all of these opinions... you can set it up... give it a try... and decide for yourself.

I did that. I set it up... loved it (right off the bat)... and never looked back.

Same here browner, Focus has always been a challenge for me. Recently set up BBF. Love it. Won’t go back either.

Set it up and use it until it feels natural. If you often focus and recompose, or switch between single and continuous autofocus, you'll then have no question regarding the benefit.

There is no magic about using a button on the back, and on the D7200 you can assign it to one of the front buttons instead. Some find it a stretch to reach the AE/AF button with their thumb, in which case the Preview button up front might feel better.

Once you use BBF you will never return to the shutter button for focus. Happy Shooting.

Simply put: You don't have to screw around with that ridiculous, shutter-release focus nonsense. Using the shutter release to focus will inadvertently cause misfires and teach you new cuss words. i.e. oooops, #@%&!!!, didn't mean to press so hard while focusing and didn't mean to get that blurry shot!

I use BB Focus exclusively - never a misfire again. It makes life behind the camera very pleasant and soooooooooo much easier to focus, and I wouldn't live without it.

Your right, I don't know why I didn't think of that except for maybe I don't use it and forget about it......

Oh really! Read up on it, reread this thread. You do not understand it. I won't re-list the advantages. For some, it may not be right. But you can not just say "none".

He's just a troll. Don't try to help him improve
his photography. That would be a fool's errand.

The main advantage I see is that you can leave your csmera in continuous focus mode all the time bet still use single focus when you want. If you press the button to focus you can release it as soon as you get focus and shoot as many shots as you want without the focus changing until you press the button again. If the subject is moving you can just hold in the button while you shoot and them camera will continuously focus for you

James, What AF area mode do you use?
