I use a WD My Passport 4tb on my IMac for backups using only the Mac backup software program that comes with the iOS. I have two 8tb WD drives for regular or daily backup of any files I create. The key to using Westen Digital devices I found, is not to use the software in the bundle. It has no value. The devices themselves are excellent at storing data for longevity.

How do you not use the softward in the bundle? I need to get an external hard drive and know nothing about them.

If you are using Windows, you should gain an understanding of Explorer and how it operates. If you connect the drive, Windows will see an executable file (the WD software) on the drive and ask if you want to run it. (I don't run it as I do my own file transfers.) And/or Explorer will ask do you want to open Explorer to view the files. You should have an understanding of files, drives, directories, and understand how they work.

The WD Passport is much-improved from what they once were. We used to call them 'pass-aways' from premature failure rates. We've used the 1 TB drives for a couple of years and they do a fine job. Still don't care for WD software at it phones home, somewhere in chinga. sv

I do not know how other companies or software does backup, but I do know that Synology has it working for me.
For my and my wife's business software, the programs are on the local PC drive and after closing, Synology automatically backs up the programs via it's Cloud backup software. I also set my external hard drives to auto back up photo files in the same way.

For CAD files and design files that we both work on, they are accessed via lan to our individual PCs, but reside on the second Synology as a server.

I recently bought a "WD WDBYFT0030BWT-WESN My Passport 3 TB Portable Hard Drive and Auto Backup Software" from Amazon Warehouse (i.e. one that's been returned & repackaged & then sold at around one-third less). It virtually installed itself & works a treat. I've set it to do an auto backup at 5.30pm each day & it seems to be doing just that. I'm very happy with it.

Addendum: My computer is NOT set to auto-run software on external devices, it asks me.

Does anyone use the WD Pass Port backup unit? And do you like it?

I have a whole pile of external drives. Do not use them as your only backup system for your images. If you can afford SSDs buy them. Anything that goes-round-and-round will eventually fail.

Are any of them WD Passports and do you like WD Passports?
was the question.

A few weeks ago there was a item posted in this forum that. Showed the life expectancy of hard drives.
I would guess that would be the way to figure what drives to purchase.

I have bought 3 of these so far with absolutely zero problems. I have one 2TB and two 4TB.

I have ALL my thousands of digital photo files on these (plus many other kinds of files). I use them all to backup my photo and other files.

(Also, in the past I bought 3 WD desktop external drives, and all were excellent with zero issues.)
